Note: Today's post wraps up the Countdown to the Delaware Handicap series. Today's post is about Urbane.
Year Born: 1992
Color: Drk. Bay/Brown
Sire: Citidancer
Dam: Dumfries Pleasure
Broodmare Sire: Pleasant Colony
Profile: Urbane began her career out west at Santa Anita where she was entered for a $50,000 tag. She won and wasn't claimed from the race. That turned out to be her lone non-stakes race as from her second race out, it would be stakes only. In her next race she would win the Moccasin before finishing 2nd in the 1994 Hollywood Starlet. Her 3yo season wouldn't start off as well, with a 3rd and a runner up finish in the first two starts before winning the Ashland. After a runner up finish in the Kentucky Oaks, she wouldn't run again until October where she would win the Maryland Million Oaks.
Her next win would be 3 starts later when she won the 1995 Los Altos Handicap at Bay Meadows then followed it up with a win in the Geisha Handicap at Pimlico. After a few third place finishes in stakes out in California, it was time for another trip east. This time to Delaware for the DelCap. Sent off as the post time favorite, she won by 3 1/4 lengths going gate to wire over Alcovy and Shoop. She would follow her DelCap win up with one final win. This time in the John Morris Handicap (now the Personal Ensign at Saratoga. She finished her career with a 6th place finish in the Spinster. Her final totals where 8 wins in 18 starts with earnings of $1,018,568.
As a broodmare, Urbane would be the dam of G1 placed Suave (A.P. Indy) a winner at a mile and quarter just like her and G3 placed Worldly (A.P. Indy), also a winner at a mile and a quarter. Urbane's youngest foal is a yearling by Distorted Humor.
Thanks for reading the Countdown to the DelCap series. My preview for this year's edition will be out tomorrow.

Countdown to the Delaware Handicap: Island Sand
Posted by
Rachel
Note: This is the second to last installment looking at the former winner of the Delaware Handicap, today it's Island Sand.
Year Born: 2001
Color: Dark Bay/Brown
Sire: Tabasco Cat
Dam: Sue's Last Dance
Broodmare Sire: Forty Niner
Profile: When you think of Larry Jones, you think of Eight Belles, Hard Spun, Proud Spell, and Believe You Can. All four got their first wins at Delaware and all went onto have great success at the highest level (with the first two runners up in the Derby (sadly with EB breaking down after gallent second and Hard Spun doing well so far as a sire) and the latter two winning KY Oaks (Proud Spell of course added the DE Oaks to her Championship Season). However, if it wheren't for Island Sand, there is a very good chance that they might not had been at the same level. Island Sand was Jones' first true superstar.
While she had won the Busanda as a 3yo, she had the unfortance of being born in the same crop as Ashado. She was behind the two time Champion in the 2004 Oaks finishing ahead of Madcap Escapade (who would be the dam to G1 winner Mi Sueno) and Stellar Jayne as well as several nice fillies. In her next race she would win the Acorn defeating Society Selction who would win the Alabama that year and Friendly Michelle who is one of my personal favorites. After that only one top three finish would come that being in the Mother Goose (behind Stellar Jayne and Ashado).
As a four year old in 2005, she finished second in the Pippen, third in the Azeri and 4th in the Apple Blossom all of those races where at Oaklawn. After a runner up finish in the Louisville Breeders Cup (now the La Troianne), she finsished a disapointing 6th in the Flus de Lis at Churchill. Then it was to the Delaware Handicap where Chilen import Isola Piu Bella who had won the local prep the Obeah, Two Trail Sioux who defeated her in the Flus, Maryland sensation Silmaril and the locals Friel's For Real, Becky in Pink and Racing Luck whose stablemate was Afleet Alex. However, she was able to grind out a win in the stretch defeating Two Trail Sioux and Personal Legend. The DelCap would be the final win of her career. Ironcily today is the aniversary of that win.
As a broodmare, she has 1 winner A P Eli (A.P. Indy) and had a 3/4 filly to him by Pulpit this year.

Countdown to the Delaware Handicap: Susan's Girl
Posted by
Rachel
Note: Continuing with the profiles of former DelCap winners as we lead up to this Saturday's race. Today, it's 2 time winner Susan's Girl!
Year Born: 1969
Color: Bay
Sire: Quadrangle
Dam: Quaze
Broodmare Sire: Quibu
Profile: Susan's Girl could be summed up into three words: Superstar and iron horse. Not only did she win the KY Oaks, but the Acorn,La Troienne (a week before her Oaks win), Cotillion, Gazelle and Beldame. That was just her 3yo season where she got 3yo Filly Honors. As a four year old, she won the Santa Maria, Santa Margarita and Santa Barbara to begin her season, then won the Susaquenna at Liberty before defeating Summer Guest and Light Hearted in 1973. She would only win once more in that season winning the Spinster. She would be named Older Female for her 4yo season. 1974 wouldn't be that kind to her as she would only made 3 starts with 1 win, however she would finish third behind Tri Jet (who she would end up seeing later when he became a stallion) in the San Pasqual against the males.
1975 would be a return to form for her with wins in the Apple Blossom, Long Beach Handicap (now known as the Gamely), and Matchmaker before once again winning the DelCap. This time she defeated Pass a Glance and Raisela. Afterwards she would win the Beldame and Spinster before ending her career with two third place finishes. Never the less, she had done enough to once again earn Older Female Honors.
In all Susan's Girl made 63 starts, with 29 of them wins. She was the first filly and/or mare to win over a million dollars ($1,251,668 to be exact) and is in Racing's Hall of Fame. As a broodmare, she had stakes winner Paramount Jet (Tri Jet), and multiple G1 winner Copelan (Tri Jet). The latter is more known as the broodmare sire of G1 winner Purge (Pulpit) and G2 winner Rockport Harbor (Unbridled's Song). However, he did sire G2 winner and millionaire Recoup the Cash.
Until a few year's ago, the final prep for the Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park was named the Susan's Girl. However, in recent years it has been replaced by the Go For Wand which is named after the most famous daughter of fellow 2 time winner Obeah.

Countdown to the Delaware Handicap: Obeah
Posted by
Rachel
Note: Twice a week leading up to the DelCap, I will be featuring past winners and how they did/are doing as a broodmare. Today it's all about 2 time winner Obeah.
Year Born: 1965
Color: bay
Sire: Cyane
Dam: Book of Verse
Broodmare Sire: One Count
Profile: Obeah was def. one of a kind. Not only she do well against the best in the country, but would become the dam of one of the most famous fillies in the country. Obeah won the Blue Hen at Delaware before finishing 3rd in the Frizette behind Queen of Stage in 1967. As 3yo she would finish second in the Firenze Handicap (now the Personal Ensign) to Politely (who had won the DelCap the year before and was the defending champion of the Firenze), when the race was held at Aqueduct. Her 4yo season included the first of 2 Delaware Handicap wins where she would defeat Double Ripple and Pattee Canyon in 1969. She would come up just short again in the Firenze this time finishing third behind Amerigo Lady. She also faced males in 1969 finishing second behind Chompion in the Stymie Handicap at Belmont. In 1970, she would once again win the DelCap this time defeating What a Dream and Helen Jennings, finish 2nd in the Beldame and finally win the Firenze.
As a broodmare, she would be amazing. Not only did she have multiple G2 winner Dance Spell (Northern Dancer), but his full sister G1 placed Discorama (Northern Dancer) as well. However, her best foal and by far her most famous is the wonderful Go For Wand (Deputy Minister). Not only did she win the Juvenile Fillies, but the Alabama, Mother Goose, Beldame, Test, Maskette and Beaumont. Her breakdown in the Distaff in 1990 was one of the most heartbreaking scenes where she was dueling with the defending champ and eventual winner Bayakoa. She was posthumously named 3yo Champion Filly and buried at Saratoga Racecourse. The Maskette was renamed in her honor and she also has the Delaware Oaks prep named after her, even though she never made a start on the track that her mother had so much success on. Wanda is also in Racing's Hall of Fame.
Obeah is honored at Delaware with a G3 race. While only Fleet Indian could turn her Obeah win into a DelCap win, other winners of the race include HOY Havre de Grace, and one of my favorite fillies Unbridled Belle who won it twice after she had won the DelCap.

Year Born: 1987
Color: Chestnut
Sire: Chief's Crown
Dam: Fair Rosalind
Broodmare Sire: Exclusive Native
Profile: Crowned started her career with 3 straight wins including in the Pocahontas at Churchill. She would then finish 2nd in the Golden Rod before ending her two year old season with a win in the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship. As a four year old, she would win the Michigan Breeders' Cup Hanidcap and would come into the DelCap off a 5th place finish in the Lady's Secret at Monmouth.
Sent off as the second choice in the race, Crowned sat second for the first 1/2 mile. By the time they had hit the 3/4 pole, she was in front by 1 1/2 lengths and in the stretch run 2 1/2 lengths. However, by the time they had hit the wire she had won by a head over Maskra's Lady with Tia Juanita a nose behind. She would win once more in her career at Laurel in the Davona Dale Handicap in 1992 as a five year old.
In her broodmare career her best foal was Best of Luck (Broad Brush) the winner of the G2 Peter Pan before finishing 4th in the 1999 Belmont behind Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo) finishing just behind the beaten TC contender Charismatic (Summer Squall) (who of course was saved by his jockey the late Chris Antley) and ahead of Hall of Famer filly Silverbulletday (Silver Deputy). Countdown to the Delaware Handicap- Basie
Posted by
Rachel
Note: Twice a week leading up to the DelCap, I will be featuring past winners and how they did/are doing as a broodmare. Today's post is on Basie.
Year Born: 1981
Color: drk. bay/brown
Sire: In Reality
Dam: Stolen Base
Broodmare Sire: Herbager
Profile: Basie began her career with two runner up finishes as a 2yo, before breaking her maiden in her second start as a 3yo. In July of 1984, she won her first stakes race the Helena at Suffolk. In her very next start she would finish 3rd in the Arlington Oaks. She wouldn't win again until her four year old season where she won an allowance in February of 1985. After finishing third in the Rampart in her next start followed up by a 3rd in an allowance she would win her next two before going on a 3 race losing streak. That streak would break in the DelCap that year, where she defeated Heatherten who had won the Arlington Matron in her start before, and Life's Magic, the 1984 3yo Filly Champion and the 1985 Older Female Champion as well as the latter year's BC Distaff winner. Basie would struggle in graded stakes company after that, with her best finish a runner up finish in the Ladies Handicap. She would end her career 4th place finish in the Suwannee River in January of 1986.
As a broodmare, her best foal is multiple G3 winner Jeano (Fappiano). In turn Jeano would be the dam to an unraced filly by the name of Contrive (Storm Cat). This makes Basie, the fourth dam to 2005 BC Juvenile Fillies winner Folklore (Tiznow). In 1994, Basie was sent to Japan. Her best foal as a broodmare there is Plaisir Damour (JPN) (Warning (GB)). While Basie had won her DelCap up in New York, she does have a big tie to Mid-Atlantic racing. Her 1/2 sister is Dont Worry Bout Me (Foolish Pleasure). All she did was foal a filly by the name of I'll Get Along. This makes Basie's dam Stolen Base the 3rd dam to none other then 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality).

Countdown to the Delaware Handicap: Jameela
Posted by
Rachel
Note: Twice a week leading up to the DelCap, I will be featuring past winners and how they did/are doing as a broodmare. Today, it's Jameela.
Year Born: 1976
Color: Dark Bay/Brown
State/Country Born: MD
Sire: Rambunctious
Dam: Ashbury Mary
Broodmare Sire: Seven Corners
Profile: Unraced at 2, Jameela began Pimlico winning her first 3 races there before winning an allowance at Delaware. After winning the Dogwood Stakes at Bowie, she suffered her first loss up at Saratoga. That was to Bitley in the 1979 Test Stakes. She would then come back to Delaware to finish second behind It's in the Air co-2yo filly Champion in 1978 in the Delaware Oaks. She would go onto to win 4 more stakes races during the rest of the season.
As a four year old, she didn't get off to a good start with 7 straight losses (including a runner up finish in the Apple Blossom) before entering the winners circle in the Geisha Handicap at Pimlico. She would then go onto win her next three races before finishing fourth to Plankton in the Molly Pitcher. After losing in the Diana, she would win her next three races before ending her season with 5th, 3rd and a few 2nd place finishes.
Her five year old season started not well with wins in only a few allowance races, but did finish strong with wins in the Muhubah (at Saratoga), Maskette (now called the Go For Wand) and Ladies Handicap. She even took on the boys with a 7th place finish in the Meadowlands Cup. Her final year of racing was as a six year old, where she traveled out west to finish second to Targa in the Santa Maria Handicap and 4th to Ack's Secret in the Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap. After a stop at Oaklawn to win an allowance and finish third in the Apple Blossom behind Track Robbery (who would become the granddam to 1999 BC Classic winner Cat Thief), she came back east where she spent the rest of her career.
On July 5th, 1982 after finishing 4th as a 4yo and runner up the year before at 5, Jameela finally had won the Molly Pitcher at Momouth. Her next start would be the Delaware Handicap where she would defeat Zvetlana and Love Sign who had defeated her the year before in the Beldame. It turned out to be the last DelCap at Delaware Park for 3 years as the track closed shortly after her win and reopened in 1986. She ended her career with defending her Muhubah title at Saratoga. She started 58 times with 27 of them being wins and earning $1,038,704 in her career.
As a broodmare Jameela's career was sadly shortened when she was struck and killed by lightning in 1985. However, both of her foals where winners and one of them was a champion. That of course being Gulch (Mr. Prospector) who won the Met Mile, BC Sprint, Hopeful, Wood Memorial, and many other stakes. He of course also went onto become a profilic sire with Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner Thunder Gulch, BC Mile winner Court Vision, Kipling a full brother to Court Vision and the sire to one of my favorite horses BC Mile winner Kip Deville, Hong Kong winner Garcia Marquez (full to Court and Kipling), The Cliff's Edge, and Wallenda.

Countdown to the Delaware Handicap- Intro
Posted by
Rachel
Starting today, 2 posts a week will be dedicated to the Delaware Handicap which is the biggest race at my hometrack. Great horses such as Flower Bowl, Obeah, Our Mims, Jameela, Relaxing, Susan's Girl, Old Hat and Busanda won the race. In more recent years champions such as Fleet Indian and Blind Luck have come out on top. I will be having a profile on a winning horse twice a week leading up to the July 21st mile and a quarter race.
Here are the horses I'm planning on profiling starting on Sun.
Week 1: Jameela, Basie
Week 2: Crowned, Quill
Week 3: Obeah, Susan's Girl
Week 4: Island Sand, Urbane
For now, enjoy 4 of the last 5 winners photos. The photo to the left is of Unbridled Belle (2007), and the three top to bottom Hysteralady (2008), Blind Luck (2011) and Life at Ten (2010). All of the photos where taken by me (Rachel Levine) in the 2008 and 2011 DelCaps. (These where the photos that I had on my Mac, so no Swift Temper (2009) photos sorry!
