On Sunday I posted who might host the undercard races for NBC. Now word comes on the wire that Tom Durkin has stepped down as the Triple Crown race caller for NBC. More than likely, Gulfstream, Suffok, and Monmouth's Larry Collmus (who last year made national headlines for his "Wife" call) will be his replacement. However, if he doesn't here are other options to replace the ledgendary announcer.
Kurt Becker- Former track announcer at Churchill, now at Keeneland. I think he's a bit underrated by people, would be a good choice. The problem is he also works for an auto racing radio network, would they be willing to let him go call a different kind of horse power for three Saturdays in five weeks?
Using the track announcer- That would be Mark Johnson at Churchill, Dave Rodman at Pimlico and what do you know Tom Durkin at Belmont (he'll be honoring his NYRA contract). If they decide to do that, the Brit of the group, Mark would be favored to call all three races in the future (again this might be a moot point, if Larry decides to sign with NBC).
Mike Bataglia- Like Kurt, he is the a former track announcer at Churchill. However, he is also the odds maker at Churchill and well people think he's an awful announcer and anyalst. What's on his side is that he already works for NBC, he would just be in the booth instead of roaming for interviews. They would probley hire someone to replace him in that spot if that happens.
John G. Dooley- caller at the Fair Grounds and Arlington. Like those already listed, he's called some of the ledgendary names in horse racing (although not as many as those above him). He has a unqiue voice that would be perfect for NBC IMO. Although more then likely they will be heading in a different direction.
Larry Collmus- In all likely your new voice for NBC. ESPN sent him to Hollywood Park last year to call the final California start for Zenyatta (my guess is because he had never called her was also part of the equation), plus he has called Rachel Alexandra across the wire first twice (in the Haskell and the Lady's Secret). It helps that he garned national attention from his "Wife" call where two horses went 1-2 and they had wife in both had wife in their names.
Trevor Denmen- there are two race caller names that go hand and hand with each other. Tom Durkin is one of them, and this California based South African is the other. The problem is he already calls the Breeders' Cup, and he's not the most popular race caller out there. Plus in 2006, he missed Street Sense in the Juvenile when he was already 3 in front, something Tom didn't do the next year when he glided along the rail to his Derby win.
Dave Johnson- "And Down the Stretch They Come!" with authority he says when the horses hit the final stretch. He's called for all three major networks I believe and currently calling on radio. The question is would NBC want him?
Who will it most likely be? Larry
Who do I want? Either Larry or Kurt or Vic Stauffer (who I didn't mention because he's likely the least likely candiate) or John
