1 Questing (GB) 3 F L 121 Ortiz, Jr. Irad McLaughlin Kiaran P.
2 Disposablepleasure 3 F L 121 Napravnik Rosie Pletcher Todd A.
3 Yara 3 F L b 121 Rosario Joel Guerrero Juan Carlos
4 Funny Proposition 3 F L 121 Bridgmohan Shaun Casse Mark E.
5 Zo Impressive 3 F L 121 Maragh Rajiv Albertrani Thomas
6 In Lingerie 3 F L 121 Castellano Javier Pletcher Todd A.

A very talented bunch of horses. In Lingerie and Zo Impressive faced off in an allowance at Gulfstream. Since then In Lingerie has won 2 stakes including the G2 Black Eyed Susan, while Zo Impressive has finished second in the Acorn and won the Mother Goose last time out. While In Lingerie does scare me, she did have a slight injury in the BES which forced her to miss the Goose. Disposablepleasure is no slouch either, she was 2nd to Zo in the MG, but will get a rider change as her jockey will be at his old track at post time. Yara is a bit of emigma here, Funny Proposition I don't know much about. Questing is 1 for 2 on dirt and will be running in the Godolphin colors for the first time. Me being a little bias is hoping that Zo and Quest, but I have a feeling it will be Zo, In and Dis in some order.

Last year's Delaware Handicap was one for the ages with Blind Luck and Havre de Grace battling it. This year's field has a chance to match it.

10th Race - Delaware Park - Saturday, July 21st, 2012
STAKES. 1 1/4 Mile Dirt. Purse $750,000. Delaware H. (Grade 2). FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. 2 Tiz Miz Sue 5 M L 114 Rocco, Jr. Joseph Hobby Steve
3 Cash For Clunkers 4 F L 114 Garcia Alan Violette, Jr. Richard A.
4 Daring Reality 4 F L 112 Santana, Jr. Ricardo Lynch Cathal A.
5 Pachattack 6 M L 118 Desormeaux Kent J. Motion H. Graham
6 Awesome Maria 5 M L 121 Dominguez Ramon A. Pletcher Todd A.
7 Love And Pride 4 F L 115 Rose Jeremy Pletcher Todd A.

There are two horses who have already won at a mile and a quarter. They are Royal Delta and Pachattack. Awesome Maria's granddam won the Alabama and she has the pedigree to go a mile and a quarter, but hasn't been the distance yet. Tiz Miz Sue gave Havre de Grace a little bit of a scare in the Obeah last year, Cash for Clunkers almost upset the Ogden Phipps and Love and Pride won this year's Obeah. Daring Reality is the unknown for me, since I don't know much about her.

If Royal Delta gets her trip, then she wins by ease. Awesome Maria and Pachattack could be stubborn enough to give just as a thrilling duel as last year. They go 2-3 with Tiz Miz Sue finishing fourth.

Finally, at Colonial.

9th Race - Colonial Downs - Saturday, July 21st, 2012
STAKES. 1 1/4 Mile Turf. Purse $600,000. Virginia Derby (Grade 2). OUTER TURF FOR THREE YEAR-OLDS. (08:38 PM) (9)

8 Lucky Chappy (IRE) 3 C L 117 Garcia Alan Motion H. Graham
9 Mr. Handsome 3 C L 117 Russell Sheldon Tullock, Jr. Timothy J.

Summer Front is staying at Saratoga. Never the less, it will be a very busy day for Ramon, Alan and Kent as the first two will ride at both Saratoga and Delaware before Colonial while the last will ride at Delaware and Colonial. With Summer Front staying in New York, Silver Max is the horse to beat. Lucky Chappy returns to turf after a dismal showing in the UAE Derby and Optimizer also returns to what is more then likely his perfered surface. I'm sticking with Max in this race with Summer Front (who would have been my pick) out.

All in all, a good day of racing. On the West Coast, Eden's Moon makes her turf debut and also at Colonial is the Virgina Oaks.

Get Your Grass On

The next couple of weeks, the 3yo focus will be on turf and not dirt. This weekend's Colonial Turf Cup is the first leg of what I call the "Turf Triple Crown" (there's actually no such thing, but if there was this would be the first leg). We see that there are some fermiler faces who where on the TC trail and/or particpated in the TC races. Lets take a look at this year's field:

10th (5:19)
Colonial Turf Cup S. (G2)
1 3/16 Miles (Outer turf) | Open | 3 Year Olds Stakes | Purse: $500,000
Prg. # PP Horse Jockey Trainer Wt. Claim $ Equip. Med. ML
1 1 Paddy O'Prado Desormeaux K J Romans Dale 121 L 9-5
2 2 Workin for Hops Baird E T Stidham Michael 119 L 9-2
3 3 Kindergarden Kid Velasquez C Tagg Barclay 117 L 5-1
4 4 Vamos a Ver Prado E S Motion H Graham 119 L 20-1
5 5 Doubles Partner Gomez G K Pletcher Todd A 121 L 5-2
6 6 Dean's Kitten Garcia Alan Maker Michael J 117 L 8-1
7 7 Two Notch Road Russell S Thompson Glenn R 119 L 10-1

The two big names on this list are Derby 3rd place finisher Paddy O' Prado and Lane's End winner Dean's Kitten. These two returning to grass makes for an interesting race. However keep an eye on Doubles Partner. He's a WinStar horse whose dam is a full sister to Serena's Song. His sire has done well with turf runners, and he has already beaten on of the most well bred horses out there in Lentenor. Kindergarden Kid fills in for his ownership mate Lentenor who is being pointed to the Summer dirt races. Paddy should win this race with ease, with Double second and Dean third.

Colonial is not the only racetrack where a turf stakes rules the card, up at Belmont.

9th (5:17)
New York S. (G2)
1 1/4 Miles (Inner turf) | Fillies and Mares | 3 Year Olds And Up Stakes | Purse: $150,000

1 1 Ave (GB) Luzzi M J Attfield Roger L 116 L 3-1
2 2 Changing Skies (IRE) Hill C Mott William I 120 L 9-2
3 3 Sweet and Flawless Goncalves L R Reed Eric R 116 L 20-1
4 4 Nehantic Kat Cohen D Tagg Barclay 116 L 15-1
5 5 Daveron (GER) Maragh R Clement Christophe 116 L 7-2
6 6 Lady Shakespeare Velazquez J R Attfield Roger L 120 L 5-2
7 7 Gozzip Girl Dominguez R A Albertrani Thomas 118 L 4-1

This should be a nice race between Lady Shakespeare and Gozzip Girl. I think Nehantic Kat may have a say in things as well. Sweet and Flawless might suprise people, but I think this maybe a little bit out of her league. I'm going with Lady in this race with Gozzip in second.

Some other great racing this weekend with Jackson Bend, Schoolyard Dreams, and Backtalk all back. The first two racing at Monmouth and the latter in Charles Town's big sprint stakes card. Don't forget that the HRBA's close on Monday and winners will be announced with a live chat on Weds.

I hope everyone bets responcibilty this weekend, I'll be back on Monday with a weekend recap!

Virgina Derby Preview

I made a boo-boo, I had thought that the DE Oaks card was drawn today, but it's tomarrow. So here is a bonus race for the previews. This will be Saturday at Colonial Downs, at a mile and a quarter on the turf for three year olds it's the Virgina Derby! Among it's winners, G1 winners Kitten's Joy, English Channel, Red Giant and last year's winner Gio Ponti.

Here is the field:

1) Affirmatif (Chris DeCarlo, 117)
2) Florentino (Alan Garcia, 121)
3) Take the Points (Edgar Prado, 117)
4) Nicanor (Jose Lezcano, 117)
5) Safety Valve (E. Camacho, 117)
6) Straight Story (Chuck Lopez, 117)
7) Hold Me Back (Kent Desormeaux, 117)
8) El Crespo (Julien Leparoux, 121)
9) Battle of Hastings (Tyler Baze, 121)
10) Lime Rickey (Cornelio Velasquez, 117)

Battle of Hastings on paper should take this, however keep an eye on Nicanor. If he wins the race, he has an outside chance for 3yo male. I would love to see Take the Points win, but I think the distance may not be the best for him. I'm going to go with Nicanor, but I think Battle of Hastings has too much experience.

But then again, that's why you run the race.
