Two years ago, Fabulous Strike won the Vanderbilt defeating that year's eventual Champion Sprinter Kodiak Kowboy. Howver, he was a nose a way from losing that race to one of my personal favorites Go Go Shoot. Today, potential Champion Sprinter Trappe Shot was continuing on what could have been the next step to the championship, instead a roadblock was put up by... Sean Avery? No, not THAT Sean Avery who as I posted on Friday was arrested for doing what else? Something stupid. No no, I wrote about this Sean two years ago when he was getting going in his career.
After being injured last year, Sean broke through the Graded Stakes ceiling in a G1 no less defeating Trappe Shot by a nose in the Vanderbilt. It's the first Grade 1 win for his trainer Alan Iwinski. To be honest, I thought that once he was confronted by TS, he would fold and back up like he was an allowance horse. However, not only did he not give in, he gave more. I hope he goes onto bigger and better things. As for the runner up, well if he bounces out of the race okay, I would take a shot at the Forego. He might be better at seven then he would be at six.
Here is a replay of the race:
Tizway looked like every part of a HOY candiate in his win in the Whitney. Turblent Descent looked good, but I was not impressed by her race in the Test. Tar Heel Mom stayed consistant in her win the Honorable Miss. Pender Harbour won the Breeders' Stakes to give jockey Luis Conteras all three Canadian Triple Crown race wins. The first to do so on two different horsese (he rode Inglorious in her Queen's Plate win). As for the Match race, honestly it did not live up to the hype. Mike won, but in all honestly Chantal's horse had zero chance in the race. I hope that she gets a rematch, but I doubt that will happen.
Next week it's all about the turf as it's Arlington Million weekend!

Meet Sean Avery and Hattaash
Posted by
Rachel
No not the New York Rangers super pest, the horse who is a 3yo gelding by Cherokee Run. Much like how Avery is from the hockey hotbed of Canada, Sean was born in the horse racing hotbed of Kentucky by Darley (a NHL comparison? I would say Detriot, but unlike them I like Darley). Sean has 2 wins out of 4 starts, however he's hit the board in all of them finishing third in his first and third race (go figure!). In matter of fact he made his first start the same day as future G2 winner Munnings (who won the race with Sean in third). I forget how I stumbled upon him, I think I was looking at Equibase one day. My dad who was a huge hockey fan (perticlery Rangers as he grew up in the NY/CT area), would have loved following this guy (although he wasn't a huge horse racing fan). Sean Avery is owned by Black Swan Stable, and has earned $ 72,180.

And Sean the human:
I had plans to do a BC recap of the rest of the races, unfortanlly that didn't come to fruition. I'm going to take the rest of the week off to let everyone reflect on the BC, and I'll be back next week with new content.
However, I do have a horse that everyone should keep an eye on. His name is Hattaash, a 2yo Strong Hope colt out of the Rhythm mare Lotta Rhythm. In turn Lotta Rhythm is out of the Cure the Blues mare Kim's Blues. Once of Lotta Rhythm's sisters is the Roar mare Lotta Kim, who ironcily has been in the spotlight this year. That's because Lotta Kim has a really nice filly that I think you've all heard of ;). Seriously though this is the closest thing to relative to Rachel for another 3 years as Kim's 2yo Empire Ruler was euthanized because of Wobbers and her colt from this year passed away from being under devolped. Lotta Rhythm is in foal to Stormy Alantic and Lotta Kim is supposed to go back to Medaglia d'Oro next year for a full brother or sister to Rachel after being barren this year. Their dam Kim's Blues is in foal to Bernardini. Oh also they have two sisters in foal to MDO, She's the Queen (Lasting Approval) and April Fooler (Distorted Humor).
