Note: Twice a week leading up to the DelCap, I will be featuring past winners and how they did/are doing as a broodmare. Today it's Crowned.
Year Born: 1987
Color: Chestnut
Sire: Chief's Crown
Dam: Fair Rosalind
Broodmare Sire: Exclusive Native
Profile: Crowned started her career with 3 straight wins including in the Pocahontas at Churchill. She would then finish 2nd in the Golden Rod before ending her two year old season with a win in the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship. Her three year old season would be winless, but she did pick up a runner up finish to Charon in the Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont. As a four year old, she would win the Michigan Breeders' Cup Hanidcap and would come into the DelCap off a 5th place finish in the Lady's Secret at Monmouth.
Sent off as the second choice in the race, Crowned sat second for the first 1/2 mile. By the time they had hit the 3/4 pole, she was in front by 1 1/2 lengths and in the stretch run 2 1/2 lengths. However, by the time they had hit the wire she had won by a head over Maskra's Lady with Tia Juanita a nose behind. She would win once more in her career at Laurel in the Davona Dale Handicap in 1992 as a five year old.
In her broodmare career her best foal was Best of Luck (Broad Brush) the winner of the G2 Peter Pan before finishing 4th in the 1999 Belmont behind Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo) finishing just behind the beaten TC contender Charismatic (Summer Squall) (who of course was saved by his jockey the late Chris Antley) and ahead of Hall of Famer filly Silverbulletday (Silver Deputy). However, he is more known as the broodmare sire of 2010 Champion 3yo Filly and last year's winner of a thrilling DelCap, Blind Luck (Pollard's Vision).
Later on in this year's meet, Delaware will honor Crowned with an overnight stakes fillies and mares 3yo's and up at a mile and a sixteenth.
