I'm not talking about Lucky Chappy, Regally Ready, Royal Delta, Game On Dude, Giant Ryan and The Factor all failing for the US in Dubai. I'm also not talking about my disapointment about Monterusso winning for Godolphin in the World Cup. No what I'm talking about is the Meydan officals ill fated decision to re-run the Dubai Gold Cup after the breakdown and subquent euthanization of Fox Hunt.
The owners of the remaining horses (which included Fox Hunt's owners who happen to be Godolphin), all agreed to run the race after the World Cup. Sadly, 4 more horses where effected by the re-run. With Bronze Cannon pulled and being euthanized, another horse being pulled up and 2 more being eased. This shouldn't have happend. They should have just abandoned the race, and then run it when racing returns to Meydan later in the year. Sadly though, money talks and in this case it was a diesaster. Now granted the remaining owners where 3 different groups, so there might not have been anything that could have been done.
While in Standardbred racing horses run up to 3 times in one day, it doesn't happen in Thoroughbred horse racing, even in Europe and Australia where it's common to have quick turn arounds. Yes in NA there are horses who have blowouts the morning of races, but those are very short at 2 to 3 furlongs. The interesting to see if PETA has a Dubai branch how long it takes for them to have a boycott. This dispite the ruler of the Emriate is one of the leading owners in the world.
This year's Dubai World Cup night sadly will marred by this one race and it's two runnings.

Dubai Preview (without the World Cup)
Posted by
Rachel
It's World Cup week! On Saturday, the UAE racing season will close with World Cup. Post positions for the race won't be drawn until Weds, so that preview will be on Friday. For now though, I'm going to go through the rest of the Thoroughbred races (1 Arabian race leads off the card).
Godolphin Mile: No US based horses in here, however there are 2 names that familar to American fans. 2 time Pacific Classic winner Richard's Kid and Barbecue Eddie who is G1 placed in California. Viscount Nelson has 1 US start under his belt, but that came on the grass this past Belmont day, and Western Aristocrat who won the Jamiaca is in here as well.
Dubai Gold Cup: This is a new race this year for distance turf horses at about 2 miles. Again there are no US based horses here, but Joshua Tree was runner up in last year's CAN Invitational. Unusual Suspect is the name most known to Americans because of his time in California. He is now rep. Australia, but will be ridden by Corey Nakatani who does have a win on him (but his Dubai record is not good, last time finishing last on another great Cal Bred, Lava Man).
UAE Derby: Lucky Chappy will be flying the Red, White and Blue in this race which is the longest KY Derby prep, but he's prob. the only horse who is shooting for that race. 2 horses Balada Sale and Helmet are Southern Hemisphere 3yo's, so they are ineligible for the TC in Northern Hemisphere. Daddy Long Legs and Wrote have US starts under them (the latter won the BC Juvenile Turf), and Maritimer was Derby bound possibly before being sold. Kinglet's dam is Karen's Caper who did quite well on the turf and Red Duke's siblings relish longer distances, but his sire didn't win past a mile and an eighth.
Al Quoz Sprint: BC Turf Sprint winner Regally Ready is in here, but his first two races so far not that great. It could be a big day for females (both horse and human) and there are two in here who have a chance. Invisible Ash who defeated Regally Ready in his last race and Margot Did who has Haley Turner (England's best female jockey) on board.
Golden Shaheen: Last year, this was the only top 3 finish for America (Euroears 2nd). The defending champ Rocket Man is back and other then a few bad finishes has not lost a step. Golden Slipper winner Sepoy is the only SH 3yo in the race, and is making his main track debut. The US is repasented by Vosburgh winner Giant Ryan and The Factor who might not be as good on synth as he is on dirt. However, this might be a race where his talent might be enough for him to win.
Duty Free: Await the Dawn and Wigmore Hall both of starts in the US. Dubawi Gold chased Frankel in three starts last year, failing to catch the undefeated champion. California Memory has been solid in Hong Kong. Delagator has the unfortance of running behind Sea the Stars, Dream Ahead, Goldikova and Strong Suit.
Sheema: Treasure Beach won the Secretariat last August and ran in the Arc. Cirrcus Des Aigles defeated So You Think at Ascot. Mahbooba ran against Miss Keller in Canada last year. Of course St. Nicholas Abbey and his young jockey where the feel good story of last year's BC. Now Joseph O'Brien will try to add another imporant race to what is expected to be a shortened career due to his height and weight.
Get well wishes for Bob Baffert who suffered a possible heart attack in Dubai where was getting The Factor and Game on Dude ready for their races on Saturday. Looks like he will be Dubai 8-10 days before returning to the States.

Fair Dubai
Posted by
Rachel
The final preps for the Kentucky Derby begin this weekend with the Louisiana Derby. However, before I preview that race. Here are some of the other races that will be going on at the Fair Grounds and Meydan in Dubai. For Dubai I'm going to preview two races.
Golden Shaheen (Group 1) 6 furlongs
1. Kinsale King
2. Dim Sum (GB)
3. Charlie's Moment
4. Force Freeze
5. Dynamic Blitz (AUS)
6. Sunny King (IRE)
7. Euroears
8. Escape Route
9. Rocket Man (AUS)
10. Green Birdie (NZ)
A rematch from last year's Shaheen with the American Kinsale King and Singapore's Super Horse Rocket Man. Kinsale King really did not have a great US season last year, but then again he is a synthetic specialist he did win his prep at Golden Gate to get ready for his defence. Rocket Man hasn't done much wrong since his second place finish, and I do think he'll turn the tables on KK this year. Euroears is a good horse, but he never has reached that elite company when it comes to sprinting. This race however, is missing the two fastest horses in the World in Big Drama and Black Caviar. Green Birdie for third, really just for his name.
Top Three:
Rocket Man
Kinsale King
Green Birdie
Dubai World Cup (Group 1) 10 furlongs
1. Fly Down
2. Monterosso (GB)
3. Prince Bishop (IRE)
4. Cape Blanco (IRE)
5. Gio Ponti
6. Victore Pisa (JPN)
7. Musir (AUS)
8. Gitano Hernando (GB)
9. Transend (JPN)
10. Poet's Voice (GB)
11. Richard's Kid
12. Twice Over (GB)
13. Buena Vista (JPN)
14. Golden Sword (GB)
The big race on the Dubai card tomorrow. Gio Ponti will be carrying the Red, White and Blue (Fly Down will more likely stay in the Middle East after this race, Richard's Kid is now based out of the Middle East and Gitano Hernando was sold to the Chechen President (ugh :(). This is Twice Over's race to lose, he won the final prep over this surface, and is probley better on synthetic then he is on turf (even though he is a Group 1 winner on turf). Gio Ponti is really not the same horse he was 2 years ago, he had some good wins last year (including defending his Man O' War), but he's coming in without a prep. If she where to win the race, Buena Vista will become the richest horse male or female in the World.

Now to the Fair Grounds card.

I see this a three horse race with Mission Impazible (who last year's LA Derby), Giant Oak and Apart. While he has been running into some tough luck lately, I remain on the Apart bandwagon... for now. I don't think Fair Grounds is Giant Oak's favorite track, and he has failed as the favorite since his first two starts. Demarcation did win the Mineshaft, but this is a bit of a different race with Giant Oak in here.

Populist Politics is going in today's Cresent City Derby instead. Like the NOH, I feel this is between only a few horses. Mucho Macho Man, Elite Alex, Machen and Wilkinson. I think Left may end up being the best of the group down the road, but he's up against in this race. I would love to see a Rockport Harbor colt do well, so I'm hoping Majestic Harbor can somehow pull the upset. With that being said, MMM is the best horse in this field and should win the LA Derby. Could be best chance the Louisiana Derby has had in a while to produce a Derby winner.

Also in action this weekend, Bind and Might. In the UAE Derby Sweet Ducky is going. Gran Lioness is at Oaklawn against Arizena (Azeri's daughter). Mixed Up returns at Aiken.
Lastly, Black Caviar won today at Moonee Valley in Australia under the lights. She is now 11 for 11 in her career, what a filly!
So that's it for today, the Oaks list returns next week and I will have a recap of all the races on Monday.

Top three:
Mucho Machen Man
Wilkinson
Machen/Elite Alex/Left
Also in action this weekend, Bind and Might. In the UAE Derby Sweet Ducky is going. Gran Lioness is at Oaklawn against Arizena (Azeri's daughter). Mixed Up returns at Aiken.
Lastly, Black Caviar won today at Moonee Valley in Australia under the lights. She is now 11 for 11 in her career, what a filly!
So that's it for today, the Oaks list returns next week and I will have a recap of all the races on Monday.

The World's Richest Race and a key Kentucky Oaks prep are being previewed today. I'm not going to preview the entire Meydan card, which you can find here (there is an Arabian race that's missing). However, I will be choosing two races, the Sheema and the World Cup.
7th (12:35)

16 16 Cavalryman (GB) Dettori L bin Suroor Saeed 125 8-1
I should note that these odds are US based, there is no gambling allowed in Dubai. 1 American in the race, but he could be America's best hope ever in this race. If Presious Passion gets to the lead early and sets his fractions, he'll be there at the end. Keep an eye on Buena Vista and Dar Re Mi, those two fillies could give PP a run for his money. The latter finishing third right behind PP and the now retired Condiut in the BC Turf. Jukebox Jury ran a gallant second in Candian Invitational last year, and Youmzain has run behind Zarkava and Sea the Stars in back to back Arcs.

14 14 Amor de Pobre (CHI) Gryder A T Barton Jerry 126 40-1
With the exception one, all of the winners of this race have been either American or had Dubai connections. Could this be the year that Japan breaks through? It could be while Red Desire isn't the horse that the Japansee where looking forward to (she is bascally filling in for the now retired Vodka who would have been going for the World Record for earnings in this race), she does have a chance after defeating Gloria de Campeao in the prep for this race. Gitano Hernando is an interesting horse, and could be the best non Dubai connections/American based (he has American owners) horse (Although I think Twice Over is sitting on a big race himself). Richard's Kid rebounded from his BCC diesaster and has been sold (again), he'll be running for Zabeel Racing (and assume a win could land him in Godolphin silks next time out). Futhest Land just seems to be overhyped. Yes he's owned by Team Roses in May/Kitten's Joy, but I don't think he's that great of a horse. Which leads me to America's best chance and that's Gio Ponti. His prep for the World Cup wasn't as bad as it seems. If he hadn't acted up in the gate Karlian would have been beaten by a length at least instead of winning by a nose. That was a very good prep for him, because with the synth surface it you don't know what will be happening. As for my pick, I'm going for the upset and going with Crowded House.
And now for tomorrow's Oaks prep,
9th (5:16)
Fair Grounds Oaks (G2)
1 1/16 Miles | Fillies | 3 Year Olds Stakes | Purse: $300,000

10 10 Champagne d'Oro Jacinto J Guillot Eric 121 L 8-1
11 11 Ailalea Castellano J J Pletcher Todd A 121 L 3-1
Ashado, Summerly, Proud Spell and Rachel Alexandra have two things in common, they all won the Fair Grounds Oaks before going onto winning the Kentucky Oaks. Thus making this race a key prep for the Run for the Lillies. Jody Slew almost wasn't entered into this year's race due to an injury, but I think she's getting better and will not be scratched. There's alot of pressure on her as she's trying to become the first filly to win the Tiffany Lass, Silverbulletday and this race. Quiet Temper is now floating a little bit under the radar, she rebounded from her poor proformance in the Tiff. to finish second in the Silver. Keep an eye on Champagne d'Oro, she has one win to her name (she actually previously won as a 2yo, but I believe she tested postive for something thus was DQ'ed), but she has stakes experience abeit poorly, but that will help her. I would love to see Quiet Temper turn the tables on Jody, and bring her form into the Oaks.
The rest of this weekend's preview will be tomorrow.

Lots of stakes that I'll be previewing, because two of them will not have payouts I will just be picking a winner for them.
#3. $2 Million UAE Derby (UAE-II), About 1 1/8 Miles (Dirt)
1. Regal Ransom (USA), Saeed bin Suroor, Alan Garcia
2. I Am The Best (GB), A. Al Raihe, Royston Ffrench
3. Lelah Dorak (KSA), B. Resaque, Edgar Prado
4. Muy Ponderado (ARG), M. bin Shafya, Wayne Smith
5. Desert Party (USA), Saeed bin Suroor, Frankie Dettori
6. Redding Colliery (USA), H. Brown, John Egan
7. So Shiny (ARG), J. Barton, Fenando Jara

11. Soy Libriano (ARG), M. bin Shafya, A. Atjebi
12. Naval Officer (USA), J. Barton, Michael Kinane
13. Paso De Gloria (ARG), M. bin Shafya, Willaim Supple
Some of these horses are what we consider 4yo's, but they are eliable as the SH horses don't age until later in the year. I gotta go with Desert Party, he's Darley/Godolphin's best chance to make the Derby this year.
#7 $6 Million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I), about 1 1/4 Miles (Dirt)PP. Horse, Trainer, Jockey

13. Paris Perfect (SAF), N. Bruss, B. Faydherbe

Shadow Rolls: Anak Nakal (USA), Asiatic Boy (ARG), Casino Drive (USA), Gloria de Campeao (BRZ), Muhannak (IRE), Paris Perfect (SAF), Well Armed (USA).
It comes down to a three horse race. Asiatic Boy, Casino Drive and Albertus Maximus. Of these three, I would love to see Casino Drive take it, the question is will the travel take something out of him. Look out for Anak Nakal to surprise if niether of those three take it.
Also on this card will be Indian Blessing going against the boys in the Golden Shaheen, and my boy Kip Deville in the Duty Free
Down at Gulfstream there are two races that I will be previewing, but Nicanor returns for a third try to break his maiden. He had a second place finish last time out.

This is a must win situation for Dunkirk. A win and he's in the Derby, a 2nd he is iffy, 3rd or worse then it's the Preakness. And that's where I think he'll be heading as I'm going with Theregoesjojo, who I think is sitting on a huge race. Could Dunkirk run a huge race, of course, I like his trainer, respect his owner, not a huge fan of his jockey, love his sire. He does have a rabbit in Europe to set an honest pace, but with him having a nice pedigree as well I wouldn't be suprised to see him suprise people and take it. Quality Road is a miler, but he could outrun his pedigee.

Here are all of the TB races that will be run Sat morning- early afternoon (here on the East Coast) in Dubai, UAE.

Because there is no betting allowed in Dubai, plus I don't know all of the horses as they are from all around the world. I won't be analyzing all the races, but Friday I will be analyzing the UAE Derby and World Cup as those two races might have an impact in the US races later this year.
Also according to DRF.com, Silver City will be focusing on sprinting and his next race will be the Derby Trial, also off the trail is Beethoven due to a small injury. This is a shame, because I thought he would to well in the FL Derby. Maybe we see him in the Haskell later this year.
The brackets will return tomarrow. :)

Here is an article on the World Cup contenders, link.
Also here are the pre-entries to all of the races, including the Arabian race which is also on the card. Post positions will be drawn on Weds. link Please note that it's a PDF file.
1992 Kentucky Derby winner Lil E. Tee passed away at age 20, link. I will admit, that I really never followed him as he came 11 years too early for me following horse racing, but it sounds like that he was a very neat horse.
Speaking of the Derby, Perfect Drift who ran in the 2002 edition, will be spending his summers from now on in Kentucky at the Derby Museum, link.
I'll have articles on the FL Derby tomarrow.
