Countdown to the Delaware Handicap- Basie

Note: Twice a week leading up to the DelCap, I will be featuring past winners and how they did/are doing as a broodmare. Today's post is on Basie.

Year Born: 1981
Color: drk. bay/brown
Sire: In Reality
Dam: Stolen Base
Broodmare Sire: Herbager

Profile: Basie began her career with two runner up finishes as a 2yo, before breaking her maiden in her second start as a 3yo. In July of 1984, she won her first stakes race the Helena at Suffolk. In her very next start she would finish 3rd in the Arlington Oaks. She wouldn't win again until her four year old season where she won an allowance in February of 1985. After finishing third in the Rampart in her next start followed up by a 3rd in an allowance she would win her next two before going on a 3 race losing streak. That streak would break in the DelCap that year, where she defeated Heatherten who had won the Arlington Matron in her start before, and Life's Magic, the 1984 3yo Filly Champion and the 1985 Older Female Champion as well as the latter year's BC Distaff winner. Basie would struggle in graded stakes company after that, with her best finish a runner up finish in the Ladies Handicap. She would end her career 4th place finish in the Suwannee River in January of 1986.

As a broodmare, her best foal is multiple G3 winner Jeano (Fappiano). In turn Jeano would be the dam to an unraced filly by the name of Contrive (Storm Cat). This makes Basie, the fourth dam to 2005 BC Juvenile Fillies winner Folklore (Tiznow). In 1994, Basie was sent to Japan. Her best foal as a broodmare there is Plaisir Damour (JPN) (Warning (GB)). While Basie had won her DelCap up in New York, she does have a big tie to Mid-Atlantic racing. Her 1/2 sister is Dont Worry Bout Me (Foolish Pleasure). All she did was foal a filly by the name of I'll Get Along. This makes Basie's dam Stolen Base the 3rd dam to none other then 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality).

Up next: Crowned

I appologize for the delay on this. Because of that, there will be three CTTDH's this week!
