Note: Throughout the year, I will be featuring 1 Freshman Stallion every other week (whenever there is not a Pedigree Look). They might be well known, they might not be. As the year goes on, I will be updating their posts with information on their foals and how they are doing. This week's post is about the son of AP Indy, Majestic Warrior.
When at the Keeneland April 2yo Sale was upon us, I would have laughed at you if you said Majestic Warrior (AP Indy) would sire the sales topper. However, he did with his son out of Counter Cat selling for $700,000 to George Bolton and Stonestreet Stable. It left me with my head scratching a little bit.
Majestic Warrior only won 2 of his seven career starts. Both of those wins came at 2 with his final win in the 2007 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga. The video posted is his maiden win which was also at Saratoga.
He would never be in the money again, but did end his career with 2 4th place finishes in the 2008 Derby Trial (behind Macho Again who would go onto finish 2nd in that year's Preakness before winning the Stephen Foster and finishing second in the Whitney and Woodward the next year, Kodiak Kowboy who would be the Champion Sprinter the next year, and in front of Da' Tara who would win the Belmont the same year) and Woody Stephens.
Sire
What can be said about his sire A.P. Indy (Seattle Slew)? Well he won the Belmont and the Breeders' Cup Classic as a 3yo to be named Horse of the Year. At stud he would sire the likes of Bernardini, Rags to Riches, Aptitude, Mineshaft, Yell, Pulpit and many more greats.
His sire Seattle Slew (Bold Reasoning) was nicknamed Baby Huey because of his awkward beginnings. He outgrew them to become the only undefeated Triple Crown winner. He would end up losing for the first time to J.O. Tobin in the Swaps to end his 3yo season. The next year, Slew would defeat Affirmed who like him was a Triple Crown winner. As a stud, Slew not only would have Indy, but Derby/Belmont winner Swale, Landaluce, Slew O Gold, Slew City Slew (sire of Lava Man) and Slewacide (broodmare sire of Caleb's Posse and Funny Cide).
His dam, Weekend Surprise (Secretariat) won 7 of her 31 starts and is a multiple G3 winner. As a dam, she is the dam to Preakness winner Summer Squall (Storm Bird), G3 winner Welcome Suprise (Seeking the Gold), Weekend Storm (Storm Bird) the dam of Kipling (Gulch) sire of BC Mile winner Kip Deville and Court Vision (Gulch) who also won the Mile, and G1 placed Weekend in Seattle (Seattle Slew).
Dam
Dream Supreme (Seeking the Gold) has the pedigree to go longer, but she did her best running in sprint amd mile races. She won both the Test and the Ballerina as a 3yo, the latter being over older females and defeating Honest Lady who would go onto finish second in the BC Sprint later that year. As a 4yo season she would take down the Humana and Princess Rooney (before both where G1's). As a broodmare, she has stakes winners in Crystal Current (A.P. Indy) and Evolutionist (El Prado (IRE)).
Her sire Seeking the Gold (Mr. Prospector) won the Super Derby before a runner up finish in the BC Classic to Alysheba. He also won the Peter Pan and Dwyer in his career before those two races and wrapped it up with a runner up finish in the Met Mile. Among his top foals that he sired include Belmont winner Jazil (whose half sister is Rags to Riches), BC Distaff winner Pleasant Home, multiple G1 placed Wanderin Boy, G3 winner in Japan Seeking the Best (IRE) among others.
Her dam Spinning Round (Dixieland Band) won 8 of her 31 races including the Ballerina. Her broodmare career was cut short when she and her weanling colt by Capote where killed in 1999 by lightning. Thus, Dream Supreme was her best foal.
Expectation: The fact that he has several high priced horses is a bit of an indicator that he is expected to do well. Coolmore's US farm, Ashford where he stands had last year's #1 Freshman sire in Scat Daddy. I think he'll finish in the Top 10 and I wouldn't be surprised if he where to finish in the top 5. Not sure he gets that top spot though. He stood at Ashford this year for $10,000.
