Countdown to the Delaware Handicap: Quill

Note: Twice a week leading up to the DelCap, I will be featuring past winners and how they did/are doing as a broodmare. Today's winner is Quill.


Year Born: 1956
Color: Chestnut
Sire: Princequillo (IRE)
Dam: Quick Touch
Broodmare Sire: Count Fleet


Profile: As a 2yo, Quill won the Gardenia and Matron Stakes, while finishing 3rd in the Spinaway. That was more then enough to be named 2yo Female Champion. As a 3yo, she won the Acorn and Mother Goose Stakes. Her 4yo season in 1960 had 2 wins, both of them at Delaware Park. The first was the New Castle Stakes where she defeated Tempted. In her final win of her career, she won the DelCap on a sloppy track for the first time in her career. In that race she would defeat Royal Native and Geechee Lou. Also as a 4yo she finished 2nd in the Top Flight and Diana.


As a broodmare Quill's best foal would be stakes winner in both the US and Europe Caucasus (Nijinsky). As for her daughters, her daugther Twill (Swaps) had Drill Ahead (Droll Rolfe) who won 13 times in 83 starts. Daughter Shill (Buckpasser) was sent to Japan and became the dam of
