We are only a few days away from the 2010 Haskell. Last year, Rachel Alexandra won for fun in the mud defeating Summer Bird, Munnings and Papa Clem. Of course Summer Bird would go onto win Champion 3yo Male, and Rachel Champion 3yo Female along with Horse of the Year. 2 Champion from 1 race, how can that be topped? Here's how:
Super Saver- Derby winner
Lookin at Lucky- Preakness winner
Trappe Shot- possibly the horse to beat
First Dude- runner up in the Preakness, 3rd in the Belmont
Uptowncharlybrown- Trappe Shot's stablemate, the local hope and running in his former trainers memory
Ice Box- Derby runner up
Afleet Again- dark horse
This could set up for the Travers which would feature as well Fly Down the Belmont runner up and Lententor. Keep an eye on Concord Point for the Travers as well, track record at Iowa and could very well be Bob Baffert's best 3yo and this is with him having Lucky.
Because there's alot of stakes action this weekend (the Jim Dandy and Diana up at Saratoga, the San Diego at Del Mar, plus the Haskell undercard which features the Jersey Derby and the Matchmaker), this weekend's preview will begin tomorrow and end on Friday. If you where at the live chat on Monday, you will know I announced a very special live chat on Sunday. The time is yet to be determined but will be no later then 8pm EDT. So stay tuned on Friday for that time.

Iced Out

Well, yesterday was a day that I rather forget then forgive. I really don't think Ice Box will make that much noise in the Derby, yes he closed nicely, but I really didn't see anything in his race that impressed me. In matter of fact, I won't be suprised if any of the Florida horses run uptrack in the Derby. There are a few horses who I was suprised with:
Lentenor: He was up against it, but he showed that he's a horse with a future. This is a case where a fourth place finish, is a good thing. I'm going to assume that he's heading back to the grass and having that stakes experience will make him even better.
Rule: Not that he lost (in all honestly this was the best race that he could have lost), but the fact that he almost had it. What burned him is that Pulsion was pressing him all the way making him a soft target in the end. Third was a solid effort for him. Not really sure what's next for him.
Radiohead: Boy that was a disapointment, hopefully he's okay and will be able to rebound next time out.
Other races yesterday, I was right about Christine Daae, that she was overhyped and she would be beat. I was just wrong with who beat her. Devil May Care was able to rebound from her last two diesasters, and upset the hyped filly who finished off the board. Is this finally Malibu Moon's year? Kiss the Kid finished third in his race. And I really want to give Bambera's connections a hug. She bobbled out of the gate and finished last in her US debut, and apperently injured herself too. Hopefully it's a not career ending.
D'Funnybone, what can I say? Possibly the best sprinter in the country and are going to ruin him by going to the Preakness. Huge props for Ibboyee who rebounded from a horrible Count Fleet run. Flatters Laus Deo who will miss the TC due to throat surgery :(.
In a way, yesterday's Gulfstream stakes races reminded me of how the Men's Tourment has gone so far.
One race I didn't preview yesterday was the return of Hot Dixie Chick. However, that's because I didn't realize that she was back. Chick returned in winning style winning at Oaklawn. Not sure what the plans are for her, I assume they are going to try the Oaks, but I wouldn't be suprised if she heads to the Eight Belles instead.
Don't forget that tomorrow Live Chat starting 7pm EDT. I'm probley going to keep it open until around 7:45 as I want 15 minutes to get ready for Dancing with the Stars which starts it's new season tomorrow night.
