Note: Continuing with the profiles of former DelCap winners as we lead up to this Saturday's race. Today, it's 2 time winner Susan's Girl!
Year Born: 1969
Color: Bay
Sire: Quadrangle
Dam: Quaze
Broodmare Sire: Quibu
Profile: Susan's Girl could be summed up into three words: Superstar and iron horse. Not only did she win the KY Oaks, but the Acorn,La Troienne (a week before her Oaks win), Cotillion, Gazelle and Beldame. That was just her 3yo season where she got 3yo Filly Honors. As a four year old, she won the Santa Maria, Santa Margarita and Santa Barbara to begin her season, then won the Susaquenna at Liberty before defeating Summer Guest and Light Hearted in 1973. She would only win once more in that season winning the Spinster. She would be named Older Female for her 4yo season. 1974 wouldn't be that kind to her as she would only made 3 starts with 1 win, however she would finish third behind Tri Jet (who she would end up seeing later when he became a stallion) in the San Pasqual against the males.
1975 would be a return to form for her with wins in the Apple Blossom, Long Beach Handicap (now known as the Gamely), and Matchmaker before once again winning the DelCap. This time she defeated Pass a Glance and Raisela. Afterwards she would win the Beldame and Spinster before ending her career with two third place finishes. Never the less, she had done enough to once again earn Older Female Honors.
In all Susan's Girl made 63 starts, with 29 of them wins. She was the first filly and/or mare to win over a million dollars ($1,251,668 to be exact) and is in Racing's Hall of Fame. As a broodmare, she had stakes winner Paramount Jet (Tri Jet), and multiple G1 winner Copelan (Tri Jet). The latter is more known as the broodmare sire of G1 winner Purge (Pulpit) and G2 winner Rockport Harbor (Unbridled's Song). However, he did sire G2 winner and millionaire Recoup the Cash.
Until a few year's ago, the final prep for the Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park was named the Susan's Girl. However, in recent years it has been replaced by the Go For Wand which is named after the most famous daughter of fellow 2 time winner Obeah.
