Profile: You could say that 1996 was a wild and crazy year for the Breeders' Cup. You had the first of Da Hoss' 2 Mile wins (of course he would win in 98 with 1 start in between his wins), you had Jenine Sahadi become the first woman to win a race as a trainer with Lit de Justice in the Sprint and the racing world said goodbye to the wonderful Cigar as he was defeated in his final race, the Classic. However, the Turf that year from a PR standpoint could go down as a disaster.
That is because of one horse and it wasn't his fault. Rick's Natural Star (Natural Native) had absolutely no business to run in graded stakes or listed stakes company. He was floundering in claiming races in New Mexico and had won only twice in his career before his race at Woodbine. The rest of the story be told thanks to the following:
Rick would run twice afterwards, finishing second to last against Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos and 3rd to last at Turf Paradise. He was claimed out of that race at Turf Paradise by Larry Webber and promptly retired. Last year, the now defunct magazine Thoroughbred Times, did an update on Rick and he was doing well in Kentucky where he lives at Sunnyside Farm.
Rick ended his career with 2 wins in 26 starts with earnings just over $6,000 (that is not a typo).
Sire
Natural Native (Raise a Native) was unraced in his career. According Pedigree Query his highest earning and winningest foal is Naturally Fearless.
His sire Raise a Native (Native Dancer) was the Champion 2yo in 1963. He is best known as being the sire of Mr. Prospector, Alydar and Majestic Prince of them who where stars on the track. He is a 1/2 brother to the stakes winner Kingmaker (Princequillo (IRE)).
His dam Owe Everything (Nashua) won the Susan Stakes at the defunct Randall Park in Ohio. She is also the dam to stakes winners Cagey Cougar (Cougar (CHI)) and Debt (Cougar (CHI)). Her dam Ondine (ARG) (Timor (FR)) was a stakes winner in her native Argentina. Owe Everything is her best foal.
Dam
Rick's dam Malaysian Star (Crimson Star) won 3 times in her 29 starts. According to Pedigree Query, her lone other foal is her highest earner and winningest. The name of that foal is Double L. Star (Natomas).
Her sire Crimson Star (Crimson Satan) won 3 times in his career as well. His winningest and highest earning foal is Sefa. He hails from the same female family as stakes placed Swing It (Hatchet Man).
Her dam Malay Miss De Boat (Malaysia) also won 3 times in her career. According to PQ, Star is her lone foal. Star hails from the same female family as stakes placed Meadowgoer (Playgoer).
Don't forget to vote in the poll that I have up as I will do a Pedigree Look post on the winner of the race you guys choose!
