I'm not talking about Lucky Chappy, Regally Ready, Royal Delta, Game On Dude, Giant Ryan and The Factor all failing for the US in Dubai. I'm also not talking about my disapointment about Monterusso winning for Godolphin in the World Cup. No what I'm talking about is the Meydan officals ill fated decision to re-run the Dubai Gold Cup after the breakdown and subquent euthanization of Fox Hunt.
The owners of the remaining horses (which included Fox Hunt's owners who happen to be Godolphin), all agreed to run the race after the World Cup. Sadly, 4 more horses where effected by the re-run. With Bronze Cannon pulled and being euthanized, another horse being pulled up and 2 more being eased. This shouldn't have happend. They should have just abandoned the race, and then run it when racing returns to Meydan later in the year. Sadly though, money talks and in this case it was a diesaster. Now granted the remaining owners where 3 different groups, so there might not have been anything that could have been done.
While in Standardbred racing horses run up to 3 times in one day, it doesn't happen in Thoroughbred horse racing, even in Europe and Australia where it's common to have quick turn arounds. Yes in NA there are horses who have blowouts the morning of races, but those are very short at 2 to 3 furlongs. The interesting to see if PETA has a Dubai branch how long it takes for them to have a boycott. This dispite the ruler of the Emriate is one of the leading owners in the world.
This year's Dubai World Cup night sadly will marred by this one race and it's two runnings.
