The Florida Derby trail begins on Saturday with the Holy Bull. Lets take a look at this year's field:
9th Race - Gulfstream Park - Saturday, January 24th, 2015
STAKES. 1 1/16 Mile Dirt. Purse $400,000. Holy Bull S. (Grade 2). FOR THREE YEAR OLDS. (Plus $15,000 win bonus for FTBOA Registered Florida-Bred). Free nomination by Saturday, January 10. $4,000 to pass the entry box and $2,000 additional to start, with $400,000 Guaranteed. After payment of 1% to all owners of horses finishing sixth through last, 62% of the remaining purse shall be paid to the owner of the winner, 20% to second, 10% to third, 5% to fourth, and 3% to fifth. Weight: 122 lbs. Non-winners of a grade I stakes allowed 2 lbs.; a grade II or $60,000 twice, 4 lbs.; of two races other than maiden or claiming, 6 lbs. Supplemental nominations may be made at the time of entry. All fees shall be paid prior to the start of the race. This race will be limited to 14 starters, with also eligibles. If more than 14 entries pass the entry box, preference will be given to graded stakes winners, then highest career earnings. Frosted (Tapit): 2nd in the
Remsen as the favorite (lost by a half a length well ahead of third
place). Took three times to break his maiden.
Keen Ice (Curlin): 3rd in
the Remsen and 5th in the Breeders' Futurity. Already has
a win at Churchill.
High Noon Rider (Distorted Humor): 3rd
in the Springboard Mile and broke his maiden in his last two. Same
cross as Any Given Saturday.
Bluegrass Singer (Bluegrass Cat): Won
the Mucho Macho Man and an Allowance/Optional Claimer. All wins have
been at Gulfstream.
Juan and Bina (Indian Charlie):
Possibly the best bred horse in the field. 5th in the
Mucho Macho Man and 2nd in the Smooth Air.
First Down (Street Sense): 4th
in the Nashua and broke maiden. Runner up in the Nashua was El
Khabeir.
Frammento (Midshipman): 2nd
and 4th in Allowance/Optional Claimers. This is his stakes
debut.
Upstart (Flatter): 3rd in
the BC Juvenile and 2nd in the Chamagne. Won NYB stakes
race at Saratoga.
Dom the Bomb (Bring the Heat): Scratched
Decision Day (Macho Uno): Won the
Coronation Futurity and maiden. First start on dirt.
