With the Super Bowl on Sunday, I thought it would be a good time to talk about Peyton and Russell. Horses that is! Here are some horses who share the same first name as the quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson.
Peyton
Touchdown Peyton (Deputy Minister), bred in FL and foaled in 2004: Started 33 times, winning 3 starts, with 4 seconds and 2 thirds with earnings of $121,620. His three wins came at Churchill, Saratoga and Philadelphia Park. He had a stakes start finishing 6th in the 2008 Cape Henlopen at Delaware. He raced in claiming company after that start and never won again.
Peyton (Tale of the Cat), bred in ON and foaled in 2009: Has started 24 times, winning 5 times with 3 seconds and 1 third with earnings of $364,840. All of his starts have been at Woodbine with a runner up finish in the 2012 Valedictory and was third in last month's edition.
Russell
Russell Road (Wheaton), bred in West Virginia and foaled in 2006: Has started 47 times, winning 26 starts with 10 seconds and four thirds, his earnings are $1,634,518. He has dominated West Virginia breds by taking home many stakes races at Charles Town and Mountaineer. He was 5th in his lone graded stakes, the 2009 Gotham which was won by I Want Revenge. Along with his many WV wins, he also has a win at Laurel in the 2009 Dancing Count Stakes.
Russell (Eolus), bred unknown and foaled in 1888: Started 73 times, winning 19 times with 17 seconds and 11 thirds (according to Pedigree Query), with earnings of $81,478. He won the Brooklyn Derby (now known as the Dwyer) and was third in both the Champagne and Brooklyn Handicap. He is the sire to stakes winner Clare Russell.
Also there is another famous Russell in the Thoroughbred world, Russell Baze of course!
Good luck to both of these gentleman on Sunday, but Peyton hopefully will come out with his 2nd SB win!
