Welcome to the first Derby list of the season! From now until the Lexington in April, I will be providing a list that is my opinion of who are the top horses to make this year's Kentucky Derby. I will not be doing an Oaks list this year as I really only want to focus on one race.
(Don't worry previews will be coming on both of them) For now I only have five horses, in mid Feb that will go up to 10, early March 15 and late March 20. So here is the list as of end of preps today Jan 25th!
1. Honor Code (A.P. Indy x Serena's Cat (Storm Cat)): The Remsen winner who has the defending Derby trainer. Has finished either 1st or 2nd in all of his starts. 3rd dam is the legendary Serena's Song. This is his sire's last chance at getting a Derby victory.
2. Cairo Prince (Pioneerof the Nile x Holy Bubbette (Holy Bull): Runner up in the Remsen, smashed a good group in the Holy Bull today. Will likely face #1 next in the Fountain of Youth.
3. Top Billing (Curlin x Parade Queen by A.P. Indy): Stablemate to #1 and hasn't made a stakes race yet. However, was a very impressive last to first finish in an allowance today on the Holy Bull undercard.
4. Shared Belief (Candy Ride (ARG) x Common Hope (Storm Cat): The 2yo Champ comes in this low for a few reasons. 1. Has never been on dirt, 2. he has a hoof abscess that has not let him to train. Still even with those two problems, he's still the best from the west... so far.
5. Conquest Titan (Birdstone x Miner's Secret (Mineshaft): I somewhat stuck up my nose at him because he didn't do well in either of his graded stakes, but he ran super well in the Holy Bull. Going farther shouldn't be a problem, but I really not sure what to think of him.
Others Considered:
Vicar's in Trouble (Into Mischief): Pedigree won't take him 10 furlongs, but the same was said of Smarty Jones.
Kristo (Distorted Humor): Sure it took him 3 starts to break his maiden, but he has never been off the board in his four starts. 2nd in the Sham in his last.
