A little late I know, but I thought that I would do a post on today's races. These are going to be a little bit of analyzing on why I'm picking these horses and then the order of where I think they will finish will be posted below. These picks will be going from East to West for today as they will be run pretty much in the order that they are listed.
Sword Dancer: I would love to see Al Khali win this race, I think a mile and half is a little bit too long for Optimizer, but he had run well all Spring. Boisterous who is the Phipps "B Turf Horse" did win the Man O War in his last and should be tough here as well. Euro shipper Nutello could be an interesting horse if he stays in the US after this race.
1. Boisterous 2. Al Khali 3. Optimizer
Alabama: With the scratch of Tell a Great Story, Princess of Sylmar is the horse to beat and in matter of fact, this was the year goal for her. Fiftyshadesofhay has won her last two and the distance will be no problem for her. Don't count out Carnival Court though. She is the second to longest shot on the board for the morning line, but she has the defending jockey, owner and trainer. She also is by a Travers winner, so the distance should be no problem. More importantly, her 1/2 sister has won at the Alabama 3 times (Royal Delta). If there is any concern it's that she has only 3 races under her belt and she has yet to go two turns.
1. Princess of Sylmar 2. Carnival Court 3. Fiftyshadesofhay
American St. Ledger: After two tries at the Million, Wigmore Hall goes his preferred longer distance. Last year's runner up Ioya Bigtime is back for another chance, but has only won once since. Stablemate Suntracer was second to his fourth in the local prep, the Stars and Stripes. Dandino makes his US debut after finishing second in last year's Canadian Invitational. Was second in his two tries this year in England.
1. Dandino 2. Wigmore Hall 3. Ioya Bigtime/Suntracer
Secretariat: Rydilluc did not do well at this distance in the VA Derby in his last. Admiral Kitten has been second in his three past starts including the local prep series for the Secretariat. Jack Milton third in the VA Derby could be the horse to beat in here. Yeager makes his US debut after starting his career in the Europe. Bethel was third to Verrazano in the Pegasus before finishing 10th in the VA Derby, but his trainer had a monster upset last year.
1. Admiral Kitten 2. Jack Milton 3. Yeager
Beverly D.: It's Marketing Mix and the rest. She does shorten up from the Sunset and many think that she should have been in the Million. She could easily bounce here. Starformer won the New York Stakes in her last and she's won going longer so the distance of 1 3/16 won't be a problem for her either. Dank is one of the three Euro's in the race, if she hasn't won a stakes with the exception of a 5th place finish, she's been right there. Duntle is 2 for three with two stakes wins on the year. Solid Appeal is undefeated this year with 2 stakes wins in Canada, but gets a class test here.
1. Marketing Mix 2. Duntle 3. Dank
Arlington Million: Has Dubai ruined Little Mike? 0 for 3 this year with two starts at Meydan for the defending champ. The Apache ran well in Dubai and in Europe makes his North American and US debut in this race. Indy Point won his US debut in his last, can he win with Gary Stevens in the irons 10 years after he looked like the winner in the race on Storming Home only to get dumped yards from the wire. Nate's Mineshaft burst onto the Older Male scene last year, but maybe a little over his head with an allowance win in his last. Grandeur is 2 for 3 in the US, but all three of those starts have been in California. The old man in the field Rahystrada will try to join 2 time Arlington Million winner John Henry as the only horses to win a G1 at 9.
1. Indy Point 2. The Apache 3. Grandeur
Canadian Derby: Reporting Star has the class finishing second in his last two at Monmouth. For Cash is the 1/2 brother to last year's winner and is coming in with a similar record. Broadway Empire and Smart Promotion both have won stakes at Northlands (where the race will be held). Shooting Jacket has hit the board in all three of his Canadian starts after starting 0 for 5 in England. This includes winning a stakes in his last.
1. Shooting Jacket 2. Reporting Star 3. For Cash
Del Mar Oaks: East coasters Discreet Marq, Emotional Kitten and Kitten's Dumplings invade the West Coast. Doinghardtimeagain won the Hollywood Oaks, but was fourth in her next start makes the switch from synth to turf. Pearlside makes her US debut after runner up finish in a G3 in France. Wishing Gate has won her last two and it could be a big Saturday for her owners and trainer should MM win at Arlington.
1. Discreet Marq 2. Kitten's Dumplings 3. Wishing Gate
