Stakes History: Humana Distaff

One of the most important races for female sprinters is held on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Originally called the Brown & Williamson Handicap, the Humana Distaff has been a G1 race since 2002. Here are a few fillies and mares who have won this seven furlong race.

1994- Roamin Rachel (Mining): In her edition of the race, she defeated Santa Catalina (who at the time was in foal with Golden Missile) who finished last in the race and Jeano (who is the second dam of Folklore) who was fourth. Later that year, she would pick up wins in the Princess Rooney and Ballerina Handicap. As a broodmare, she is the dam to multiple G1 winner in Japan Zenno Rob Roy (JPN) (Sunday Silence).

1997- Capote Belle (Capote): Although she did her best running at Oaklawn, she was a G1 winner (wo n the Test the year before) when she beat Hidden Lake and J J'sdream. She could also hang with the boys finishing second in the Count Fleet at Oaklawn, the race before her visit to the Churchill winner's circle. She would go onto win 2 more stakes at Oaklawn and finished third against the boys in the De Francis Dash. As a dam, she has G3 placed Zapper Belle (Ghostzapper).

2003- Sightseek (Distant View): Her race record in 2003 and 2004 any other year would have gotten her back to back Older Female Eclipse Awards. Sadly, she was running at the same time as Azeri. Defeating Gold Mover (2nd) and Miss Lodi (3rd) in a field of eight, it was her first G1 win of her career. She would then pick up wins in the Phipps, Go For Wand and Beldame. In 2004, she would defend her Phipps and Beldame titles. Her best foal is G3 placed Raison D'Etat (A.P. Indy).

2007- Hystericalady (Distorted Humor): The year she won the Humana where she defeated Pussycat Doll in a field of 10, she would pick up a win in the Molly Pitcher and was runner up in the BC Distaff. The next year she finished third in her defense of the Humana, but picked up wins in the Delaware Handicap, Fleur de Lis and Molly Pitcher before ending her career with a 5th in newly named Ladies Classic. Her oldest foal is 2 this year.
