In between Secretariat and Seattle Slew, there was a filly named Ruffian. She was really good, in matter of fact undefeated at 2 and 3. Sadly though as most know by now she broke down in a match race with Foolish Pleasure and was euthanized due to post operation complications. NYRA honors her memory with the Ruffian Stakes every year. Her owners the Jannerys and cousins the Phipps made history by winning the Kentucky Derby yesterday. It's very fitting that Orb hails from her female family (her dam is his 5th dam). Even though Orb was my blog pick, the rain did factor in jumping ship a little bit, but not really that much. Joel Rosario has basically stamped himself as the #1 jockey in the US now.
I'm also estatic for Chuck Fipke's Golden Soul, I'm not sure if its someone who works for him, or someone who works at Darby Dan who stands Perfect Soul on the Irish bred stallion's Twitter account, but I love it. Plus Twitter friend Sid Fernando is associated with Mr. Fipke.
Some other notes:
Johnny V: Yeah you won't be getting the mount on Orb anytime soon
Javier: If I where Chad Brown, I would be a bit well, PO'ed
Calvin: Maybe the third was an appolgy enough for cutting off Julia in the Oaks?
Gary: Not bad for your first Derby in eight years
Repole: Once again well... I'll leave it at that.
Doug: Shame no back to back, but Goldencents is okay
Street Sense got his first G1 winner!
Fair Grounds is back! 10 years after Funny Cide and Peace Rules, they got 2 horses who prepped there hit the board! The other of course ran in the FL Derby.
A.P. Indy: Finally he gets in the winners circle... As the grandsire. Ah well.
So now the next step is the Preakness. Who will show up? We'll find out in two weeks. Im sure Mylute and Oxbow could be two horses there, but I hope Oxbow waits 5 weeks for the Belmont. I will have a Pedigree look on Orb later this week. I will also have a PL look on Princess of Sylmar who won the Oaks on Friday.
For now congrats to the Phipps, Jannerys, Shug, Joel, dad Malibu Moon, mom Lady Liberty and all those connected to Orb. I'm sure Ruffian is smiling down on him.
As for me going to Baltimore for the race, I don't think it's in the cards. Maybe for the Belmont since I will be celebrating a very special birthday this year.
