Pedigree Look: Pierro

Note: Pedigree Look is a bi-weekly post series that I will be doing. I will be looking at a horse in depth for both the sire and the dam.

Name: Pierro (AUS)
Year Born: 2009
Color: Bay
Sex: Colt
Sire: Lonhro (AUS)
Broodmare: Miss Right Note (IRE)
Broodmare Sire: Daylami (IRE)

Profile: 6 horses have won the 2yo Triple Crown in Australia. 2 of them have been in the 2000's, Dance Hero in 2004 and now this year with Pierro (AUS) (Lonhro (AUS)). The three races that comprise the Triple Crown are the Golden Slipper (richest race in the world for 2yo's) at 1200 meters (a little over 5 furlongs), AJC Sires Produce Stakes at 1400 meters (a little over 6 furlongs) and the Chamapagne Stakes at 1600 meters (almost a mile). He is surely to be named 2yo Champion in Australia and could have a real shot at the 3yo Triple Crown which will take place next year (note: Southern Hemisphere breeding and foaling season is July-December, thus everything is 6 months behind Northern Hemisphere). The video posted is his Golden Slipper win.

Sire

Lonhro (AUS) (Octagonal (NZ) won 26 of his 35 starts. The distance didn't matter as he won from sprints to mile to a mile and a quarter. Among the stakes he won include the Caulfield Guineas as a 3yo, Queen Elizabeth Stakes as a 4yo and Australian Cup as a 5yo. That last race was during his Horse of the Year season, as well as defeating Mummfiy who would win some great races himself and Makybe Diva who would prove herself to be an excellent horse winning 3 Melbourne Cups in a row. As a sire, Lonhro has been excellent. Other then Pierro, he is the sire of G1 winners Beaded (AUS), Denman (AUS) among others. Lonhro is just wrapping up his first Northern Hemisphere season at Darley's US farm Jonabell.

His sire Octagonal (NZ) (Zabeel (NZ) was also a Horse of the Year in Australia winning the Cox Plate in his career. Other then Lonhro, he is also the sire of: multiple G1 winner in France and Italy Laverock (IRE), G3 winner Diamond Deck (NZ) and G2 winner Hierogram (AUS) among others.

His dam Shadea (NZ) (Straight Strike) is G2 winner in Australia and G1 placed as well. She is the dam to multiple G1 winner Niello (AUS) (Octagonal (NZ)), and Shannara (AUS) (Octagonal (NZ)) who is G2 placed. Shadea is the 1/2 sister to Australian Oaks winner Mahaya (NZ) (Sir Tristram (IRE)).

Dam

Miss Right Note (IRE) (Daylami (IRE)) raced under the name Right Note in France. She would win once in her 6 start career before being sent to Australia. Pierro is her best foal to date.

Her sire Daylami (IRE) (Doyoun (IRE)), was a mulitple G1 winner in France, Ireland, England and the US culitmating his career with a win in the BC Turf. As a stud he hasn't had the best of success, but has had some nice foals. They include: G3 placed in Ireland, England and US Cougar Bay (IRE), G3 hurdle winner Brampour (IRE), G1 winner in Ireland and G1 placed in the US Grey Swallow (IRE), and G1 hurdler Zaynar (FR).

Her dam Sky Song (IRE) (Saddlers Wells), raced in France never winning. Her best foal is a G1 winner in France and Italy Laverock (IRE) (Octagonal (NZ)). Her dam, Criquette (GB) (Shirley Heights (GB)) is a stakes winner in England and is the dam of G1 placed in Ireland and G2 winner in England Flying Cloud (IRE) (Storming Home (GB)).

Later on this year, Pierro will stretch out and try possibly the 3yo Triple Crown which is made up of the Randwick Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and the Australian Derby. Only 4 horses including his grandfather Octagonal have won it. While it's too early to tell weather he can do it or not, he'll give his all by doing it.
