I was looking at Twitter this afternoon, when I saw something that I didn't expect to see. Apparently on today's Judge Judy had a widow of a young man who passed away fighting over money with his mother. Okay, that happens all the time. Except the widow and mother in question are the wife and mother of the late Michael Baze.
Really? This couldn't have been done in private? Especially the way he died and with his cousin Tyler now struggling with his issues? Sadly that family is snakebit.
(Edit: Baze's mother is suing her daughter in law for travel expences to KY (I assume to pick up Michael's body), even though she got a 250k insurance policy payout. Baze's wife has to pay $855 for cremation, but not memorial service expences. Thanks to Ray Paulick for tweeting Judge Judy's decision).
These days though jockeys are making more headlines then the horses themselves. The morning of the Oaks when was supposed to ride Hard Not to Like, Robby Albarado was arrested for assault. Just last weekend, eventual 8th place finisher in the Preakness Tiger Walk lost his jockey when Kent Desermoux failed a breathalyzer at Belmont. He was just replaced this week on Dullahan who has a shot of winning the Belmont.
With a Triple Crown on the line, all this jockey issues are not good for the sport. However, Mario Guterriez who will be under the microsope the most is remaining humble about his sudden rise to fame. I think for jockeys, horse racing is alot like Hollywood. You can rise fast, but you can fall fast too. It will be interesting how well Guterriez handles the onslot of press that will be coming as we get closer to the Belmont.
