Freshman Stallion Feature: Sixties Icon (GB)

Note: Throughout the year, I will be featuring 1 Freshman Stallion every other week (whenever there is not a Pedigree Look). They might be well known, they might not be. As the year goes on, I will be updating their posts with information on their foals and how they are doing. Today's post is on Galileo (IRE)'s wonderful St. Ledger winner Sixties Icon (GB).

Mile and three quarters is a rare distance in the US these days. However, in Europe it's not. In matter of fact as much as they love their milers, the longer a horse can run the better. In 2006, Sixties Icon (GB) did just that. Winning the final leg of the English Triple Crown, the St. Ledger at York at that distance. In that race he defeated Red Rocks (IRE), who would go onto win the Breeders' Cup Turf that same reason. He was named Champion 3yo Stayer of the year (the Champion 3yo Male was the late great George Washington). As a four year old, he won the G2 Jockey Club Stakes at a mile and half, before ending his career as a 5 year old with a few G3 wins. With 8 wins in 18 starts and earnings of £533,054 ($856,724 US), he entered stud in 2009.

His Parents

Sire

Galileo (IRE) (Sadlers Wells), is one of the greatest sires in the World. As a runner, he won both the Epsom and Irish Derbys defeated horses like Fantastic Light to be named the 2001 3yo Champion in Europe. As a stud, he has sired some great horses. Among them are: recent Eclipse Turf Male winner Cape Blanco (IRE), the formentioned Red Rocks, last year's Secretariat winner Treasure Beach (GB), French G1 winner Galikova (FR) (who is a 1/2 sister to the great Goldikova (IRE) (Anaaba) who saw Galieo this year), Keenland's QEII winner Together (IRE), Melbourne Cup runner up Purple Moon (IRE) and the great undefeated superstar Frankel (GB).

His sire Sadlers Wells (Northern Dancer) won the English 2,000 Guineas, and Eclipse Stakes. As a stud, like Galileo he would be unmatched. Among his top horses include BC Turf winner Into the Wings (GB), 4 time Ascot Gold Cup winner Yeats (IRE), Irish Derby, and Arc winner Montjeu (IRE) and multiple G1 winner in England and Ireland Alexandrova (IRE), among many others.

His dam Urban Sea (Miswaki) is one of the most beloved broodmares of all time. She would win the Arc at the age of 4, and would go onto a very successful broodmare career. Other then Galileo, she is the dam to Italian G1 winner Black Sam Bellamy (IRE) (Saddlers Wells), one of my personal favorite fillies G1 winner My Typhoon (IRE) (Giant's Causeway) and the two English TC race, Arc winning superstar Sea the Stars (IRE) (Cape Cross (IRE)). Her son Born to Sea (IRE) (Invicible Spirit (IRE)), will be among the favorites for this year's Epsom Derby.

Dam

Love Devine (GB) (Diesis (GB)) won the Epsom Oaks in her career and was 2nd in the Yorkshire Oaks. As a dam, Sixties Icon is her best foal however she also has Native Ruler (GB) (Cape Cross (IRE) who is G2 placed.

Her sire, Diesis (GB) (Sharpen Up (GB)) was the champion 2yo in England winning 3 of his six starts. As a sire, he has Arlington Million winner Debussy (IRE), G2 winner Diadella, JPN stakes placed Meiner Messer, and many more foals.

Her dam, La Sky (IRE) (Law Socity) was second in the Lancashire Oaks in her career. As a broodmare, she is the dam to stakes winner Dark Promise (GB) (Shamardal), G3 placed Floreeda (GB) (Linamix (FR) and G3 placed Solar Sky (GB) (Galileo (IRE)).

Expectation: Sixties Icon already has three winners and a stakes placed filly (Effie B in the Marygate Stakes at York). Not bad for a horse who did better at longer distances then the sprints and miles that are used for 2yos. Hopefully he has continued success in his stud. Sixties Icon stands for £4,500 at Norman Court Stud in England.
