Last year, Prince Will I Am had cut off A.U. Miner and Romp which led to Prince Will I Am being DQ'ed. However, it was the firstworks after the race that became the story line, Calvin Borel went off on Javier Castellano which led to fines for the both of them and a suspension for Castellano for careless riding (neither where suspended for the fight). This year, with defending jock Johnny V on Birdrun, defending champ Eldaafer gets a new rider... who happens to be one of the two jockeys involved in last year's fiasco. As for my pick in this race? I gotta go with Giant Oak. He won the Clark (via DQ) last year, and won the Donn earlier this year. The longer they go, the better he is. Birdrun for second, Pleasant Prince for third.

Majestic City will be the first of the 3 Cal horses to keep an eye on. Shakspeare Shaliyah's has been tearing up New York, since he's switched to turf, Finale has been a monster. I think this is a race where you really need a jockey who knows the Churchill surface well. I'm sticking with Animal Spirts in here.

Honestly, Jackson Bend should be in the Dirt Mile. Although Big Drama is the defending champ, he hasn't made that many appearances in races. Amazombie, Apriority, Euroears and Giant Ryan have picked up the slack though. This is not going to be an easy race for BD, but he showed that an inside post didn't hurt him last year, I would not be surprised if an outside post doesn't hurt him either. He's my pick, Giant Ryan for second and Aikenite for third.

14 Chamberlain Bridge 7 G LA 126 Theriot Jamie Calhoun W. Bret
The wierd thing is... the most logical winner Ben's Cat was not eligible for the race since he's not BC nominated (he won last weekend's Laurel Dash). Hoofit won on poly, but he wasn't the greatest runner in New Zealand, this is too short for Caracortado, but I don't think his connections wanted to face Goldikova. California Flag and Chamberlain Bridge have won the past two editions of this race, but haven't been the same horses this year. I'm going with Havelock who won the Woodbine Mile prep, Play the King and then followed up that win with a win at Keeneland. Regally Ready for second and Chamberlain Bridge for third.

A very good field of horses here. Caleb's Posse and Shackleford could lock up 3yo honors here should Stay Thirsty and Uncle Mo fail to hit the board in the Classic. However, the three year old with the most upside is Wilburn. He's already defeated those two in the Indiana Derby, and will have help with his stablemate Tapizar who won an allowance defeating Boys at Toscanova and Uptowncharlybrown in the race. Keep an eye on Jersey Town, he's hasn't won yet this year, but he did win the Cigar Mile last year and he's better at a mile then he is at seven furlongs. The Factor did defeat older in his first try, but lost to Amazombie in his next race. Goes here after a good work out by Euroears. I gotta stick with Jersey Town, he could be coming in the race just right. Wilburn for second and Tres Borrachos for third.

Traditionally, this race is the race before the Classic. However, because of Goldikova it has been moved up to earlier on in the day. This is Europe's best chance to take home a race since the Americans are not the best group. Sarafina was the beaten favorite in the Arc, but her jockey is riding a high from his big win in the Melbourne Cup. Midday makes her first start in this race after running the past two times in the BC F/M Turf, she will try to become the second horse to win two different races (Zenyatta being the other). I'm going with a 1-2 girl power here with Sarafina on top, Midday a good second and Stately Victor to be the top rep for the home team.

The first major step to the Run to the Roses begins here. The last two times Michael Matz has run in major races at Churchill, he's won them both (06 Derby with Barbaro, 06 BC Distaff with one of my favorites Round Pond). He could have his best horse since Round Pond running in Union Rags. There are two Euros in the race, Daddy Long Legs whose a Group 2 winner, and Crusade whose a Group 1 win was a sprint, but should take to the dirt fine as his dam is La Trivata. Fort Loudon swept the male version of the Florida Stallion Stakes, the past two horses to do that? Big Drama and Jackson Bend who meet in the Sprint. Hansen is the unknown, yes he won his first two races by large margins, but those where at Turfway on poly. Take Charge Indy is a darkhorse in this race, his dam Take Charge Lady was a good stakes winner. Dullahan at this point of his career is ahead of his Derby winning brother, Mine That Bird. I'm going with Creative Cause, he was able to turn the tables on Drill last time out, and his style of running suits Churchill to a T. This might be a little bit long for Union Rags' taste, it wouldn't be shocking if he does get the win though. Take Charge Indy for second and Dullahan for third.

I was all ready to say that I think Goldikova would lose the Mile this year to Strong Suit... until his asst. trainer wined about not being able to work on the turf today (it's a lose/lose situation for both the Euro trainers who did complain and the BC IMO that's all I've got to say about it). This will be the last hurrahs for Goldi, Sidney, CC, CV, and Gio (possibly, he might have one more race in him). Turallaure won the Woodbine Mile last time out and could the US' best chance to defeat the Queen of the Mile. I've got to go with Gio in this. He's been second both times he's been in the BC and he got off the shined to get back in the winners circle. Also while her connections are okay with the rail, in a race like this you really never want to be there. Goldi because of her class for second and Sidney's Candy for third.
Last, but not least the Classic!

Prayer for Relief is out with a fever. Here are the pros and cons for each horse.
Flat Out
Pros: Win at a mile and a quarter, great workout, buzz horse, finished ahead of Game On Dude in past race, could be a big weekend for sire and his brother
Cons: Really hasn't defeated fantastic horses this year, has already lost to Havre de Grace, race over the surface earlier this year was poor, mile and quarter win was slow (albeit in the mud).
Drosselmeyer
Pros: Distance should suit him well, has won over the surface
Cons: Might be a little too short for his taste, win was his maiden breaker, hasn't been that consistant this year.
Ruler on Ice
Pros: Distance should be okay, Belmont winner, coming off a 2nd place finish, has the defending jockey
Cons: Slop specialist (both wins where in the slop), might be too short for him
So You Think
Pros: On paper, he's the best horse in the field. Has wins over a mile and a quarter, good post.
Cons: Never been on dirt (as of this time he hasn't been released from quarantine yet), quick turn around (Arc 4 weeks ago, Champion Stakes 2 weeks ago and now the Classic, this doesn't include the travel time), NZ bred record not good in the Classic (Starcraft was seventh in 05 to St. Liam).
Ice Box
Pros: Last year lots, this year absolutely none
Cons: Oh boy, last in his last couple of races, has not won since his FL Derby win last year, is ambisously placed.
Rattlesnake Bridge
Pros: 2nd at a mile and a quarter, has faced both Uncle Mo and Stay Thirsty and done well against them, Classic winning trainer, one word: Calvin
Cons: Just started his career this year, worst loss was against horses he should have been able to beat, taking a step up in class.
Game On Dude
Pros: Good post, win at a mile and a quarter, track suits him, could make history with his jockey. Sire won the Classic in 98 over this track
Cons: Finished behind Flat Out in past race, will be tested on the front by other horses.
Stay Thirsty
Pros: won at a mile and a quarter, 2nd in the Belmont to Ruler on Ice, better of the two Repole horses, sire the runner up in 06 over this track
Cons: better at Saratoga then Churchill, ran poorly both times on this track, bad 3rd in his final prep.
Havre de Grace
Pros: Beat the boys (including Flat Out and Ice Box), won her prep well, 2nd at a mile and a quarter by a nose this year, coming in with the most consistancy, connections have good record in big races over this track (owner has 1 BC win, trainer has an Oaks win, and owner and trainer have 2 Derby runner up finishes), Sire won this race in 05.
Cons: Winner of that nose finish bombed in her next race, had a good but not great work, never won at a mile and a quarter
Headache
Pros: Won last time out
Cons: Everything else
Uncle Mo
Pros: Looks like he's over his illness winning impressively, won over this track last year, still has a chance at an award this year
Cons: reportly did not look good in his final work, never been over a mile and eighth, lost the last time he went two turns, asking him to do alot from an outside post
To Honor and Serve
Pros: Three year old with the most upside, won last time out, has the pedigree to go a mile and a quarter, Classic winning trainer
Cons: Record against high company is okay but not great, outside post.
So who gets the win? I gotta go with my heart and go with Havre de Grace. This would put her and Liam and inpresidented company as not only the second sire/foal combo to win the Classic (Awesome Again and Ghostzapper being the first), but the first father/daughter to do it. So lets go Grace! Flat Out for second and Stay Thirsty for third.
More importantly, I hope all the horses return safe and sound!
