Breeders' Cup Vault: Miesque

Freddie Head is well known for being the trainer of super filly Goldikova who will try to win her third Mile in a row. A feat that no horse has ever accoplished. However, there is one horse that Goldikova is compared to the most, Miesque. Her trainer says that she is a better horse then Miesque, and that's saying alot. Why? Freddie Head rode Miesque to her two Mile wins.

Miesque would be the first horse to win back to back races. Her first time was as a 3yo when she was coming off wins in both the French and English 1,000 Guineas against her own sex. She had won 5 times that year and did not finish off the board. Here is her 1987 Mile win embeding was disabled. That year she won Champion 3yo filly in France as well as the Eclipse Award as Turf Female and Champion Miler in Europe.

Miesque would return the next year, adding two more French races to her record. And once again the daughter of Nureyev would not be denied. This time defeating an American Triple Crown race winner in Bet Twice. Once again she would win the Eclipse for Turf Female and Champion Miler in Europe. Here is her 1988 Mile win:

As great as Miesque was as a race horse, she was even better as a producer. Her son Miesque's Son would sire 2006 Mile and Eclipse Champion Turf Male winner Miesque's Approval, her daughter East of the Moon would become a Champion in France like her mother (she could only manage finishing in 12th in the 1994 Mile with Cash Asmussen in the irons) and would be the dam of G3 placed Mojave Moon. However it would be her son Kingmambo who would stand tall the most.

By Mr. Prospector, Kingmambo never ran in the US, but has had several Breeders' Cup runners. Lemon Drop Kid ran in the BC three times (Juvy and twice in the Classic) and Henrythenavagator finished second in the 2008 Classic. Kingmambo is also the sire of Russian Rythem, Mambo Train and Voodoo Dancer among others. He was recently pensioned at Lane's End in Kentucky.

Along with those three, Miesque is also the dam to Mingun and Kitalpha (sire of 3yo Champion in Zimbawe Killaridge).

Tomorrow: We go back to the first Breeders' Cup in 1984
