Breeders' Cup Vault: Hollywood Wildcat and War Chant

There have been many horses who have won Breeders' Cup races, then have gone on to either sire or foal BC winners themselfs. Unbridled and Awesome Again (Unbridled's Song, Wilko/Round Pond/Ginger Punch) respectively are two of them. Of course when think of females you think of Personal Ensign, her daughter My Flag and her granddaughter Storm Flag Flying. However, there has been one mother/son combo. That is of the Kris S. filly Hollywood Wildcat and her son the Danzig colt War Chant.

Much like in 1990 with the Argentian bred Bayakoa was defending her title, Paseana also a native of Argentina was back to defend her title. Ironcily they shared the same trainer, Ron McAntley who until these two Argetinian super fillys came to US was most known as the trainer of John Henry. However Paseana would have to deal with 1993 Triple Tiara winner Sky Beauty, along with Hollywood Wildcat who had been on a collision course for each other all year long. Sky Beauty ruling the East, Hollywood Wildcat ruling the West. Neil Drysdale who four years before trained Gorgeous to a runner up finish behind Bayakoa trained Hollywood Wildcat while Sky Beauty was trained by Allen Jerkens.

As they made the turn for home, both Hollywood Wildcat and Paseana where dueling for the lead. Sky Beauty made a short bid for the lead as well, but faded mid stretch. In the end, Hollywood Wildcat was able to hold on dispite her jockey Eddie Delahoussaye losing his whip at the end of the race.

Here is that race:

That was more then enough to earn Hollywood Wildcat Champion 3yo Filly Honors over Sky Beauty. As a four year she came back to defend her Distaff title, but could only manage sixth place behind One Dreamer. She would race once more time after her second try at her Distaff a win in a small stakes.

In 2000, her second foal War Chant would take center stage. Like his mother, War Chant was trained by Neil Drysdale. After finishing second in the Santa Anita Derby, he was entered into the Kentucky Derby where he finished 9th ahead of future stallionmate Exchange Rate, 1999 2yo Champion Anees and the rivals High Yield and Hal's Hope. That would be his last time dirt in his career. After a few months off, War Chant was put on the turf which he won. His next race would be the Breeders' Cup Mile. One of the horses he would face would be Dansili, a son of War Chant's sire's most famous son Danehill (Dansili is also a son of Hasili, most Americans know her from her fillies F/M Turf winner Intercontenal, Banks Hill and Heat Haze). Going off as the favorite, War Chant sat towards the back of the field. In the stretch it looked like he was going to lose the race, however he was flying late just to nip longshot North East Bound at the wire with Dansili in third. Thus he and his mother become the first (and so far only), mother/son duo to win Breeders' Cup races.

Here is War Chant's win:

That would be War Chant's final race, he currently stands at Three Chimneys in Kentucky. As for Hollywood Wildcat? She also is the dam of G1 placed Ivan Denisovich (who like Dansili is by Danehill, thus making him a 3/4 brother to War Chant), as well as stakes placed Ministers Wild Cat and Double Cat. Yesterday, Favorite Gal, her yearling filly by Hard Spun was the session topper at Fasig Tipton's October Auction.

Tomorrow: The American born, French raced super filly Miesque!
