This time next week, we will know the field for this year's Kentucky Derby. Months of prepration come down to 2 minutes around 6:30pm next Saturday. This year's Derby Trial could have an impact on the field. I'm going to be previewing the race tomorrow (along with the Withers, and at least one more race which will be detirmined sometime tomorrow), but two horses are veying for spots. Pleasant Prince (runner up in the FL Derby) and Eightyfiveinfifty (speedball) are two going in this year's Trial. They could then end up in next week's Derby. However, I don't think either should be in the Derby costing placements for horses such as Susuko, Backtalk and Jackson Bend. Here are a few reasons why:
1. Eighty while freakishly fast, loses focus very easily. One moment of lost focus, he and his jockey could be in serious trouble.
2. Pleasant Prince's connections (Ken & Sarah Ramsey), already have Dean's Kitten (who also shouldn't be in the race, but that's another story for another day).
3. The winner of the Florida Derby, Ice Box I personally think was a flukey winner, the same goes for Pleasant Prince. (And yes I'm saying this as a fan of Rule)
4. There are better pace setters (Sidney's Candy, Rule, American Lion, Super Saver) and better closers (Endorsement, Eskendereya, Dublin) then Eighty and Prince.
I do appologize if you are a fan of either horse, I just feel like there are horses who deserve to be in the race more then these two. I think both of them need to win in order to be in, so it could end being a moot point. We'll see.
Weekend preview to come tomorrow.
