10 Years Ago Today...

An Oklahoma born mare named Belle's Good Cide foaled her second foal, a colt by the freshman sire Distorted Humor in Saratoga Springs, New York. The mare and foal where owned by WinStar Farm, formally known as Prestonwood Farm which is located in Kentucky. Belle wasn't the best horse in the world, however she did do well in stakes races even before she broke her maiden. Distorted Humor was a miler who ran at the same time as world record holder Elusive Quality. At the time he was standing for the low fee of $10,000. What WinStar didn't realize at that time, was that Funny Cide would be the one that got away.

Today "The Gutsy Gelding" turns 10 years old (yes the universal birthday for all Northern Hemisphere horses, but today was the day he was actually foaled). After the Derby, I'm planning to do a much more in depth post on him. For now let's enjoy his Kentucky Derby win,

Happy Birthday Funny!

  1. All the more reason to root for Rule this year, as his dam Rockcide is a half-sister to Funny Cide :-)

  2. Yes she is, to make it even cooler. Rockcide is by Personal Flag who is the full brother to the late great Personal Ensign. I've been on the Rule bandwagon even before he was born. WinStar IMO got very lucky that she ended up at the Keenland auction when she did to bring her line back into the fold.
