Horse Racing and Social Media: Journalism's New Era

Note: This post may offend people, I apologize but this is something that I need to get off my chest. Read more after the jump for more info.

The past couple of weeks have been a bit wild when it comes to horse racing. With the retirement of Will Take Charge, the death of Cigar and just this week with the passing of Juan Saez, the younger brother to WTC's former regular rider Luis Saez. All of those three events where criticized in how they where handled on Twitter. Fingers where pointed, people argued (myself included) and it was taking fun out of social media.

That being said with websites like Horse Racing Nation, Facebook and Twitter now around, this opens the door for more "arm chair journalists" (again I would consider this blog as one of those "arm chair journalists"). Especially with the WTC situation where Twitter broke the story first before traditional outlets like Bloodhorse and DRF could. Social Media is allowing people to interact more with owners, journalists and other fans. These connections are allowing people to get their sources quicker. Many people are not fans of this type of journalism which is fine. Here's the thing... you need to get used to it.

Journalism is heading into a new era, and this is still a relatively new aspect when it comes to horse racing. Still the only way to learn from this is the continue to watch for reports from those who work for Bloodhorse, DRF and horse racing journalists for local papers; as well as reports from HRN, Paulick Report ect. Hopefully the two can blend well and we will be seeing less and less bickering.
