Saratoga- The First Two Days

Saratoga opened up with a bang in the big race of the day the Schuylerville Stakes. Fashion Alert won the race, but the runner up Take Charge Brandi gave her everything she could handle. The winner is by Old Fashioned, but honestly she didn't seem to be a horse who could possibly do well in the Spinaway (which will be run on Tom Durkin's final day), but of course I have been wrong about that so many times.

Here is a replay:

Today was the Diana Stakes which was won by Somali Lemonade. In a way it was fitting that she won as her trainer Michael Matz was in the 1989 United Flight 232 crash in Iowa where he saved 3 siblings. Today is the anniversary of that crash. Those siblings where reunited with Matz in 2006 at Churchill where they help root Barbaro home to the wire first.

On the male front, Big Trouble out nosed Mr. Z who actually caused his own trouble in the Sanford Stakes (which was celebrating 100 editions). Like in the Schuylerville, the runner up was likely the better horse in the long run.

I'll have a Del Mar preview and recap soon.
