Happy New Year!

Another year gone and here's to a great 2014. Here are some anniversaries to look forward to this year:

10 years ago: Smarty Mania erupted with Smarty Jones winning Kentucky Derby and Preakness coming just short in the Belmont. He was named 3yo Champion Male. Also Ashado won 3yo Female, Azeri won her final Older Female Championship, Ghostzapper was Horse of the Year. In the final G1 for 3yo's on the year, Rock Hard Ten won the Malibu, the runner up? A former claimer by the name of Lava Man.

15 years ago: Charismatic won the Derby and Preakness before breaking his leg in the Belmont after finishing third. If it weren't for his late jockey Chris Antley, he wouldn't be here today. Charismatic was named 3yo Champion and Horse of the Year. Cat Thief his stablemate won the BC Classic with Cal bred Budroyale finishing in second (that is a hint of who will be celebrating the first of 2 15 year anniversaries in 2015).

20 years ago: Go For Gin won the Derby, but Concern won the Breeders' Cup Classic which the 2nd of what would be three wins in a row for Jerry Bailey. However, neither was named 3yo Champion as that honor went to Holy Bull who was also Horse of the Year.

25 years ago: Hard to believe that this year will mark 25 years since Sunday Silence vs Easy Goer. The former took the first two legs of the Triple Crown with the latter spoiling in the Belmont. However SS had the last laugh with his Classic win which got him 3yo Male honors and Horse of the Year.

30 years ago: John Henry won his final Eclipse Awards, Turf Male and Horse of the Year after a season that included wins in the Arlington Million (his second in the race) and Turf Classic among others.
