2014 Freshman Stallion Feature: Introduction

With 2013 just about over, it looks like that Dunkirk will take the Freshman title here in the US. Next year's Freshman Stallion Class (studs whose first foals where born in 2012) is possibly the best class since the 2011 Freshman group that included Scat Daddy, Street Sense, Discreet Cat and Hard Spun. Just take a look at whose first foals are 2yo's next year:

Afleet Express- Travers winner
All American (AUS)- Same female family as Rock Hard Ten who will have 1 Northern Hemisphere crop
Blame- BCC winner, the only horse to defeat Zenyatta, Champion at 4
Bullsbay- Whitney winner, 3rd in Rachel Alexandra's Woodward
Charitable Man- Peter Pan winner, 4th in Summer Bird's Belmont
Discreetly Mine- 1/2 brother to Discreet Cat, King's Bishop winner
Eskendereya- Derby favorite before injury
Grasshopper- Gave Street Sense all he could handle in the Travers
Harbinger (GB)- Group 1 winner in Europe defeating future US Champ Cape Blanco
Jonesboro- Only stakes winning foal of Hall of Famer Mom's Command
Justenuffhumor- 1/2 brother to Dreaming of Anna, from the same female family as the #1 Turf Stallion in the US Kitten's Joy.
Lookin at Lucky- Champion at 2 and 3, Preakness winner
Makfi (GB)- 2,000 Guineas winner
Midshipman- BC Juvenile winner, Champion at 2
Munnings- Sprint superstar, 3rd in Rachel's Haskell
Quality Road- Florida Derby winner
Summer Bird- Belmont winner, 3yo Champion Male, 2nd in Rachel's Haskell
Super Saver- Derby winner
Tale of Ekati- Wood and Cigar Mile winner
Warrior's Reward- MDO's first male G1 winner

There are several others on this list that I hadn't even mentioned. Over the next few months I will be profiling a new stallion every other week. I'll make a prediction on how well they will do in their first year and if they have a chance to become a superstar. Check back next month for the start of this series!

  1. "where born in 2012" Where were they born?

  2. The foals where born in 2012, not the stallions.
