Freshman Stallion Feature: Diabolical

You could say that Diabolical (Artax) was a horse who had run against some of the recent good horses to come out of US racing. He was also one of a handful of horses who where based there to be successful in International racing. Diabolical had faced the likes of Barbaro, Bernardini, Thor's Echo, After Market, Kip Deville among others in his career. Although his speciality was sprinting, he finished second in the Laurel Futurity, and won the Nick Shuk Memorial both of them distance races on the grass.

Among the races he won included the Stanton Stakes, G3 Mahab Al Shimaal S in Dubai, G2 Maryland Sprint Handicap and G2 Vanderbilt Handicap among many others. He was second in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and G2 Didem Stakes in England. He was also third in the G1 Krisflyer International Sprint (finishing ahead of Takeover Target) in Singapore and G1 Golden Shaheen in Dubai. He earned $1,467,401 in his career.

Sire

Artax (Marquetry) was the winner of the Breeders Cup Sprint in 1999. The same year he had a punch thrown at him and his rider in Maryland Sprint Handicap. He also won the Hollywood Futurity and Vosburgh in his career. As a sire his best foal is G1 winner Friendly Michelle, he also has stakes winner Magnetic Miss.

His sire Marquetry (Conquistador Cielo) won the Hollywood Gold Cup and Eddie Read in his career. As a sire he has: BC Sprint winner Squirtle Squirt, stakes winner Pavo, G1 placed Mass Market, stakes winner Shilla and G3 placed American Freedom among others. His dam Regent's Walk (Vice Regent) is stakes placed. Other then Marquetry, she is the dam of Irish and French G1 placed Spain Lane (Seeking the Gold).

Artax's dam Raging Apalachee (Apalachee) was unraced. He is also her best foal. She is a 1/2 sister to stakes winner Fagers Charm (Sham), the granddam of G1 winner Tout Charmant (Slewvescent). Her third dam Magic Night (AUS) (Star Kingdom (IRE)) won the Golden Slipper in her native Australia.

Dam

Bonnie Byerly (Dayjur) was winless in three starts. She is also the dam to G1 placed in France What a Name (IRE) (Mr. Greeley).

Her sire Dayjur (Danzig) is a G1 winner in Europe and was the runner up in the 1990 Breeders' Cup Sprint. As a sire he has stakes winner Dayjob, stakes winner in Japan Shinko Splendor, and stakes winner Major Zee. His dam Gold Beauty (Mr. Prospector) is G1 placed and was named Champion in 1982. Other then Dayjur, she is the dam of G1 winner Maplejinsky (Nijinsky). Thus this is the same female family as Hall of Famer Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom (FR)), BC Distaff winner Pleasant Home (Seeking the Gold) and G1 winner Tale of Ekati (Tale of the Cat) among others.

Her dam, Plenty of Grace (Roberto) is a G1 winner. Other then Bonnie, she is the dam of stakes winner Noblest (Deputy Minister). She is the granddam of stakes placed Position A (Aldebaran) and G3 placed Grace Atatomy (Aldebaran). She is a 1/2 sister to G1 winner and 1999 Turf Female Champion Soaring Softly (Kris S.) Thus this is the same female family as stakes winner Much Rejoicing (Distorted Humor), G3 winner Bound by Honor (Woodman) and stakes placed Wafi City (E Dubai) among others.

Prediction
Even though he is not standing in a major state when it comes to big money, I expect Diabolical to do well this year. Hopefully he can finish within the top 50 for North American Freshman Stallions. Also hopefully his foals will inherit his versatilely. Diabolical stands at in New Mexico for $3,500.
