I know I said that I was going to be looking at the pedigrees of past BC race winners up to the Breeders' Cup. Well some news that came out on Friday made me change my mind and this horse flat out deserves to be reconginzed. As you know, Paynter has been fighting the deadly diesese Colitis. First in New York and then in PA. Earlier this week he was moved from Penn's New Bolton Center to Fair Hill where he will stay for 2 to 3 weeks to continue his recovery before moving to WinStar for a few months. While his connections are hopeful that he will run again, they won't risk it. Lets take a look at Paynter's pedigree.
Name: Paynter
Year Born: 2009
Sex: Colt
Color: Bay
Sire: Awesome Again
Dam: Tizso
Broodmare Sire: Cee's Tizzy
Profile: Paynter did not make his first start until Feburary of this year which he won. After finishing 4th in the Santa Anita Derby behind eventual Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another, Paynter went to Churchill to run in the Derby Trial which was held a week before the Run for the Roses. He would run second to Hierro on a sloppy track. After winning an allowance at Pimlico on Preakness day, the Belmont would be his next start. While the race lost the headliner after I'll Have Another was scratched after an injury, a big crowd still came. After all, Union Rags and Dullahan where the two who where looked to spoil the California party. It almost didn't happen.
Going into the stretch, Paynter was in the lead and it looked like that the Californians where going to sweep all 3 legs of the Triple Crown. However, Union Rags made his way through on the rail to live up to his billing of being his owners dream horse. Still, an unbelieveable achivement for him and his owner Ahmed Zayat who also owned Bodemeister who finished second in both the Derby and Preakness. Paynter then won the Haskell and would have been the favorite for the Travers if he didn't fall ill.
Here is Paynter's Haskell win:
Sire
Awesome Again (Deputy Minister) won both the Queen's Plate and Breeders' Cup Classic during his career. He is also the winner of the Stephen Foster, Whitney and Jim Dandy. As a sire he has had some wonderful horses as well. Including Paynter, he has had Hall of Famer Ghostzapper, BC Distaff winners Ginger Punch and one of my personal favorites Round Pond, BC Juvenile winner Wilko and the longtime fan favorite Awesome Gem among many others.
His sire Deputy Minister (Vice Regent) was the 2yo Champion and Horse of the Year in his native Canada as well as Champion 2yo in the US. He won the Laurel Futurity and the Donn (when the race was a G2). Among of his top foals include Belmont spoiler Touch Gold, G1 placed Victory Speech, G3 winner War Deputy (whose son War Buckaroo (Expotential) I profiled just before the Olympics), the wonderful Go For Wand, Triple Crown winner Open Mind among many others. His dam Mint Copy (Bunty's Flight) was stakes placed and is also the dam to stakes placed Carousel Baby (Verbatim).
Awesome Again's dam Primal Force (Blushing Groom (FR)) won four races in her career, her lone try in a stakes race would be a fifth place finish in 1990. She would become one of the best broodmares of recent time thanks to the exploits of AA. However, little brother Macho Uno (Holy Bull) wouldn't be outdone. He would go onto win the BC Juvenile and was named 2yo Champion in the US. He also would win the PA Derby and Mass Cap as a 3 and 4 year old respectively. At stud he has Derby 3rd place finisher Mucho Macho Man and Woodward runner up Macho Again who gave Rachel Alexandra the biggest scare during her remarkable 3yo season in 2009. They are by far Primal's best two foals that she has thrown. She is the 1/2 sister to the dam of G3 winner Miss Ra He Ra (Rahy).
Dam
Tizso (Cee's Tizzy) was winless in her 2 start career. Other then Paynter, she is the dam of G3 winner Tiz West (Gone West).
Her sire Cee's Tizzy (Relaunch) is one of the last remain male line decesdents to Man O' War still around (maybe the only one around, but I'm not 100% sure). The 3rd in the Super Derby, other then Tizso and her siblings, he is the sire of Eclipse Champion Gorumet Girl.
Her dam Cee's Song (Seattle Song) won once during her career. She is the dam to both BC Classic runner up Budroyale (Cee's Tizzy), but 2 time BC Classic winner and Horse of the Year Tiznow (Cee's Tizzy). Her dam Lonely Dancer (Nice Dancer) is the dam of stakes winner Ceetoit (Cee's Tizzy). Lonely Dancer is the full sister to mutliple stakes winner Mr Kapacity (Nice Dancer).
Don't forget to vote in the poll that I have up as I will do a Pedigree Look post on the winner of the race you guys choose!
John Taintor Foote wrote a great book about racing nearly 100 years ago, a collection of his stories, called HOOFBEATS. You can find this book on the Internet for sale....PAYNTER is the reincarnation of the young colt TORCH BEARER "who gave his racing life for his lady" in this book. I hope all who love PAYNTER will read this book.
