Pedigree Look: Steele Road

Note: Pedigree Look is a bi-weekly post series that I will be doing. I will be looking at a horse in depth for both the sire and the dam. Also this will be the first week that Pedigree Look will have a new format, it will be similar to the Freshman Stallion Features.

Name: Steele Road
Year Born: 2009
Color: Bay
Sex: Colt
Sire: Street Cry (IRE)
Dam: Ashado
Broodmare Sire: Saint Ballado

Profile: Steele Road hasn't won a race yet in his career. His record is 2 seconds and 1 third with earnings of $29,000. The photo to the right was him in the the final stretch finishing second, 6 1/2 lengths behind his ownership mate Quarto (who I will feature in another Pedigree Look down the road). Despite all that, Steele Road is very royally bred.

Sire

His sire Street Cry (IRE) (Machiavellian), was a decent 2yo. He finished 2nd in the 2000 Del Mar Futurity (ahead of Squirtle Squirt who would go onto win the BC Sprint the next year) and Norfolk Stakes (both of those races where won by Flame Thrower), before finishing third in the BC Juvenile (behind Macho Uno and Point Given). As a 3yo, he would win the UAE Derby and finish 2nd in the Discovery behind Evening Attire. In his final year of racing, Street Cry would win 2 Grade 1's (Dubai World Cup and Stephen Foster) before ending his career finishing second in the Whitney.

As a sire, Street Cry has been quite remarkable. His son Street Sense became the first horse to win both the Juvenile and Kentucky Derby in history. He also took the Travers the same season in 2007. He also has sired a Melbourne Cup winner in Shocking (AUS), UAE 2,000 Guineas winner Desert Party, Beaumont winner Street Sounds, and multiple G1 winner Seventh Street. Although, there is one filly who he is the sire of who has something in common with Steele Road's dam. That is she won the BC Ladies Classic (when Ashado won it it was still called the Distaff), and became a fan favorite. Of course she also won the Classic and became very close to becoming only the second horse to win the Classic 2 times. Of course I'm talking about the one and only Zenyatta.

Street Cry's sire Machiavellian (Mr. Prospector), won two G1's in France as a 2yo and finished second in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket as a 3yo. As a sire, he would have 1999 Dubai World Cup winner Almutawakel (GB), Royal Heroine winner Magic Mission (GB), Street Cry, and multiple G2 winner Shakis (IRE). His dam Coup de Folie (Halo) was G1 placed in France and finished third at Aqueduct in the Royal Heroine in her lone US start. As a dam other then Machiavellian she has: Houdini's Honey (Mr. Prospector), the dam to G1 placed Awesome Act (Awesome Again); G1 winner in France Exit to Nowhere (Irish River (FR)); Coup de Genie (Mr. Prospector), a G1 winner and Champion in France, dam to French champion Denebola (Storm Cat).

His dam Helen Street (GB) (Troy (GB)) won the Irish Oaks and was placed in the Yorkshire Oaks. Street Cry is her best foal, but she is also the dam to stakes Helsinki (GB) (Machiavellian) dam to French and English G1 winner Shamardal (Giant's Causeway). Her dam Waterway (IRE) (Riverman) is a G3 winner in France and Helen is her best foal on the track.

Dam

Steele Road's dam Ashado (Saint Ballado) was one of the best fillies to run in the early 2000's. As a 2yo, she won both the 2003 Schuylerville and Spinaway before finishing 3rd Frizette and BC Juvenile Fillies and ended her season with a win in Demoiselle. In 2004 as a 3yo, she won the Fair Grounds Oaks and was second in the Ashland. That led to the Kentucky Oaks where she went off as the favorite after the scratch of Halfbrided (who had defeated her in the BC the year before). She won with ease over Island Sand. It was a bit of an up and down season after that though. While she did both the Coaching Club and the Cotillion, she was 2nd in the Mother Goose and 3rd in the Alabama. That lead to the BC Distaff where she was facing older females in the race for the first time. It turned out to be no problem as she would defeat Storm Flag Flying (granddaughter of BC Distaff winner Personal Ensign and BC Juvenile Fillies winner herself) by a 1 1/2.

That earned her 3yo Filly honors at the Eclipse Awards in January 2005. As a 4yo, her season didn't start out as planned with losses in the Apple Blossom and Pimlico BC Distaff. She would rebound with wins in her next 2 races before finishing her career with a 4th place finish in the Personal Ensign, a win in the Beldame and a 3rd in her defence of the BC Distaff. Had she finished first or second in the race, she would have passed Azeri for the highest earning filly/mare in North America (Zenyatta currently holds the record). Never the less, she sold for a then world record $9,000,000 to Darley at the 2005 Keeneland November Sale (the current record holder is Better Than Honour (dam of Jazil and Rags to Riches). She would also pick up Older Female Championship honors. As a broodmare, her record hasn't been as accomplished. Her first foal Star Cat (Storm Cat) would go unraced and currently stands in Indiana. Steele Road is her second foal.

Her sire Saint Ballado (Halo) won the 1992 Arlington Classic and finished 4th in the Haskell that same year. As a sire, he would not only sire Ashado, but her full brother G1 winner Sunriver, 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam (who in his brief stud career sired last year's HOY Havre de Grace), Derby runner up Captain Bodgit, and Met Mile winner Yankee Victor. His dam Ballade (Herbager (FR)) won 2 races in her career. It was as a broodmare that she made her name being the dam of several great horses. Among them 2yo Champ Devil's Bag (Halo) and multiple G1 winner as well as CAN Hall of Famer Glorious Song (Halo) (GS would become the dam to Rahy).

Her dam Goulash (Mari's Brook) finished second in the Linda Vista Hanidcap in 1996. As a broodmare, other then Ashado and the formentioned Sunriver, she would be the dam of G3 winner Saint Stephen (Saint Ballado), and stakes placed Storm Creek Rising (Storm Creek). Goulash's dam Wise Bride (Blushing Groom (FR)) made 1 start in her career. Her best foal racing is multiple G3 winner Quite a Bride (Stormy Atlantic).
