Pedigree Look: Proud Citizen

Note: Four posts this week will be about the winning sire and dam of the Kentucky Oaks and Derby. Starting us off for today it's the Oaks winning sire Proud Citizen.

Name: Proud Citizen
Year Born: 1999
Sex: Stallion
Color: Bay
Sire: Gone West
Dam: Drums of Freedom
Broodmare Sire: Green Forest

Profile: You can say that Proud Citizen could be a bit of an overachiver in the breeding shed. His first crop hit the track in 2007 and he's been succeeding since. No his numbers haven't been up with the leading sires, but last year he finished in the Top 80 stallions standing in North America and this year could quietly be putting together another solid year at stud. Especially picking up his second Kentucky Oaks winner in Believe You Can.

At the track, Proud Citizen only won 3 times in 16 starts with earnings of $638,822. However, he won the G2 Coolmore Lexington after faultering in the SA Derby before to earn his way into the 2002 Derby. He would finish 2nd behind suprise winner War Emblem, in the Preakness it was a third place finish and the Belmont fifth. Although his best finish after the Triple Crown season in a graded stakes race was a 4th in the 2003 Met Mile, he would get his final win in an Allowance. While at stud, he is primarly supported by mares owned by former KY Gov. Breaton Jones, 2 of those mares have produced Oaks winners. Of course BYC, and 2007 BC Juvenile Fillies runner-up and 2008 Eclipse Champion 3yo Female Proud Spell. He is also the sire of Went the Day well who finished 4th in this year's Derby as well as LA Derby runner up Mark Valeski, Razorback winner It Happended Again, multiple graded stakes winner Motovato and stakes winner Trickmeister.

His sire Gone West (Mr. Prospector) won 6 of 17 races himself. They included wins in the Withers, Gotham and Dwyer (which at the time was a G1). At stud, he's the sire of former world record holder at a mile on the grass Elusive Quality (who of course is the sire of 2004 KY Derby winner Smarty Jones and 2008 BCC winner Raven's Pass), multiple G1 winner Came Home, Belmont winner Commendable, 2 time BC Mile winner Da Hoss, multiple G3 winner and super sire Mr. Greeley, BC Turf winner Johar, BC Sprint winner and Eclipse Champion sprinter Speightstown, among others. His dam, Secrettame won 6 races including Shirley Jones Handicap. She also finished second in the Gazelle. Other then Gone West, she is the dam to multiple G3 winner Lion Cavern (Mr. Prospector). Her dam, Tamerett (Tim Tam) won 4 races in 36 starts. She is the dam of English 2,000 Guineas winner Known Fact (In Reality) and multiple G1 winner Tentam (Intentionally).

His dam Drums of Freedom (Green Forest), didn't win in 7 starts in Europe. Her highest earning son, Toho Spark (Caerleon) was sent to Japan. Her dam is Danseuse Etoile (Buckpasser) is also the dam of world traveler and G1 placed Drapeau Tricolore. Her dam Arctic Dancer (Neartic), is out of Natalma (Native Dancer), this makes her a full sister to the great Kentucky Derby winner and sire Northern Dancer (Neatic). As a broodmare, she had the great racemare La Prevoyante (Buckpasser).

I expect Proud Citzen's stud fee to go up next week with this weekends sucesses, and I hope he continues to have success at stud in the future.
