Pedigree Look: Arch's Gal Edith

Note: Four posts this week will be about the winning sire and dam of the Kentucky Oaks and Derby. The final post is this mini-series about the Derby winning dam.

Name: Arch's Gal Edith
Year Born: 2002
Sex: Mare
Color: Dark Bay/Brown
Sire: Arch
Dam: Force Five Gal
Broodmare Sire: Pleasant Tap

Profile: Since 2007, only two Derby winning broodmares had less then 3 starts in their racing careers (Mining My Own (unraced) and Mien (2 starts). This year, a third was added when 1 for 1 Arch's Gal Edith joined their ranks. Of course she is the dam of I'll Have Another (Flower Alley). She's been successful as a broodmare so far in her career with the exception of her 2yo Gloria S (Tapit), her three other foals have made the racetrack. Before I'll Have Another's 3 stakes wins so far this year, her highest earning foal was Those Wer The Days (Thunder Gulch). (Note: Those Wer The Days' name is a play on the theme song of All in the Family which I assume other then being a combo of her parent's names is what Edith was named after.)

Her sire Arch (Kris S.) is a G1 winner and won 5 of his seven starts. His most famous (or in this case infamous) foal is Blame who denied Zenyatta (Street Cry (IRE)) her 20th win in a row to win the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic, however he lost to her for Horse of the Year honors. He also has last year's AR Derby winner Archarcharch, Canada's Horse of the Year and newest Hall of Famer Arravale, 2 time G1 winner in England Les Arcs, and multiple G1 winner the ill fated Pine Island. His dam Aurora (Danzig) was stakes placed in her career. Other then Arch, she is the dam of UAE Horse of the Year Festival of Light (A.P. Indy) and G1 winner Acoma (Empire Maker). Her dam Althea (Alydar), was one of a kind. She beat the boys at both 2 and 3. A champion at 3, she is also the dam of JPN 2yo Champion Yamanin Paradise (Danzig), and G2 placed Alyssum (Storm Cat). Her dam, is the wonderful broodmare Courtly Dee (Never Bend). She is the dam of G2 winner Aquilegia (Alydar), and G1 placed Native Courier (Exlusive Native) among others.

Edith's dam Force Five Gal (Pleasant Tap) was 3 for 27 in her career, including finishing second in the Border Cup Stakes at Fort Erie. Her highest earner as a broodmare is Five Wild Cat (Forest Wildcat). Her dam Last Cause (Caucacus) finished third in the Miss Grillo. Her best foal on the track is stakes placed Ultimate Strike (Crafty Prospector).

Edith's 2012 foal by Midnight Lute passed away shortly after birth (according to the forum Thoroughbred Champions). She is back infoal to Gio Ponti.
