Horse Vacation Options

The past few months I've been wanting to travel on my own to get away from Delaware. I want it to be horse related so naturally I thought of Saratoga in August. However the past few days I realized that I could also go to Lexington for Keeneland's Sept. Yearling sale.

There are pros and cons to both.

Saratoga

Pros
  • Oldest racetrack in the US
  • Travers and/or Woodward weekend is when I would go
  • Quality stakes horses, as well as some up and comers
  • Never been to that region of NY
Cons
  • Weather might be hot and humid since it is August.
  • Horses who I might be looking foward to seeing might not race
  • Not much in the area
  • I'm not the world's biggest fan of NY as it is and there is a chance I might be going to the Belmont
Lexington

Pros

  • Keeneland!
  • Kentucky Horse Park (which houses the Hall of Champions where Funny Cide lives)
  • Old Friends (where Commentator lives)
  • Going on a tour of the horse farms
  • Never been to Kentucky
Cons

  • No racing (since I'll be there for the sale)
  • The shuttling stallions will be in the Southern Hemisphere (which means no Hard Spun, Street Sense, Invasor, Artie Shiller, Medagalia d' Oro, etc. :()
  • There might not be any Open Houses anyway since those are normally in Nov. since that's when the Breeding Stock sales are.
Transportation wise I would need to switch from train to bus if I where going to Lexington and I have options for Saratoga. I'll let you know which one I chose to do. :)
