Super Saturday Vault: 2004 Jockey Club Gold Cup

From now till Thursday, I will be profiling one race from a past Super Saturday. Today, it's the 2004 Jockey Club Gold Cup!

He was in a rut. No longer was he America's darling as Smarty Jones had taken over that title, even though by the time the JCGC had come around, he was retired. Funny Cide came into that year's race off a second place finish at Saratoga behind Evening Attire. The it horse going into that race was PA Derby winner Love of Money, it didn't help that Newfoundland, Bowman's Band, The Cliff's Edge (the other 3yo in the race) and Evening Attire where entered as well. Funny was up against it. However, the Gutsy Gelding showed why he earned nickname.

As they made their way to the final turn, it looked like that Funny Cide was on his way to another loss. Newfoundland looked like that once he made the lead, that he would pull away, but as The Cliff's Edge was making his move, Funny went with him. It was enough momentum to give Funny and jockey Jose Santos their third and what would be final Grade 1 win together. Newfoundland finished second and The Cliff's Edge was third.

Funny Cide now lives at the Kentucky Horse Park in their Hall of Champions.

Tomorrow: 1999 Beldame
