He is the son of the only Triple Crown winner who went through the three races undefeated, his broodmare sire is possibly the greatest race horse to ever grace the race track. How could a foal live up to that expectation? Not only did AP Indy do so, but he turned out to be one of the best sires and broodmare sires the world has seen. The winner of the 1992 Belmont, Breeders Cup Classic and Horse of the Year was pensioned today after getting none of the mares booked to him in foal. What a career he's had, from 2001 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Tampera, to 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft, to 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini, to of course possibly the crown jewel of them all 2007 KY Oaks and Belmont winner Rags to Riches. As a broodmare sire he can count several great horses among them. This includes 2006 Derby runner up and Haskell winner Bluegrass Cat, as well as BC's cousin last year's Derby winner Super Saver (their dams are full sisters). I know I missed several great horses that he is either the sire or broodmare sire of, but this is just a taste of what he had.
Dispite his pensioning, his legacy will continue to live on. Bernardini has been doing well with his first crop, it looks like that Mineshaft has finally turned a corner, Congrats was the leading freshman sire last year, Flatter has been having some good horses lately, Stephen Got Even's son Stevie Wonderboy's first crop hits the track this year, and finally Rags to Riches little girl (by Giant's Causeway) should be making her first start later this year.
Have a great retirement Indy! To remember his racing days, here is his Belmont win.
