From now until the Monday before Derby week I will be putting out a list of 5 reasons why a horse will or will not win the Derby. That doesn't mean that a perticler horse will win or won't win, but these are just some things to keep in mind. First up, the Bernardini colt To Honor and Serve.
5. In his final 2yo start, To Honor and Serve won the Remsen Stakes. The race has produced several Derby winners, however has not produced a winner since Thunder Gulch. In edition the last winner of the Remsen to hit the board in the Derby was Bluegrass Cat.
4. His sire Bernardini did not race at 2, however his 3yo season was one of the best. Not only did he win the Preakness (which was marred by Barbaro's injury), but the Jockey Club Gold Cup and Travers. He also finished second in the Classic the same year. His dam Pilfer won 3 times, but her half sister is G2 India.
3. The last two Derby winners (Mine That Bird and Super Saver) needed two times to break their maiden. That is also the same amount of times To Honor and Serve needed to win.
2. He will need a jockey switch for the Derby. That's because John Velesquez will more then likely be riding Uncle Mo. Of course if something where to happen to him...
1. Two words: Bill Mott. The trainer of Cigar finally got a Triple Crown race winner with Droysellmeyer, plus he won the Ladies Classic with Unriveled Belle and won his first G1 with new uber client Juddmonte with Proviso. Now all he has to do is get that Derby win.
Next week: Alternation
