Breeders' Cup Vault: 2007 Classic

It was one of the best fields of all time. Horse of the Year honors where up for grabs between six different colts. 4yo Lawyer Ron, and 3yo's Any Given Saturday, Street Sense, Hard Spun and Curlin. Add in a Champion in Europe in George Washington who was returned to the races after being being declare with low fertility. The year was 2007 and the track was Monmouth Park. All eyes where on the previously mentioned six colts. Rain all that week made the track for both Breeders' Cup days sloppy. As time neared the obvious storyline was the rubber match between Street Sense and Curlin. Any Given Saturday was thought to be the spoiler after defeating Curlin and Hard Spun two races back. Then there was Hard Spun who had danced every dance all season long, but was a wise guy choice. Lawyer Ron meanwhile dominated the Older Male division all year. Here is the 2007 Classic:

Unfortnally George Washington broke down after he completed the race was subquently euthanized. His lone daughter Date with Destiny won first time out in Europe. Curlin was named 2007 Champion 3yo Colt and Horse of the Year, Hard Spun was named the first PA Bred Horse of the Year as well. Street Sense Any Given Saturday and Hard Spun both stand at Darley while Curlin stands at Lane's End. Awesome Gem who in a way became an afterthought will be particpating in Friday's Marathon.

Tomorrow: we wrap up the vault with "The Incomperable, Unbeatable Cigar!" the 1995 Classic
