While tomorrow's post will be focusing on this year's Preakness, I thought I would go back in time a little bit to last year. It was on Preakness weekend where Medglia d' Oro made history by having two of his daughters sweep the two major 3yo stakes on Preakness weekend. We all know about Rachel Alexandra's resume, but the horse who won the Black Eyed Susan Payton d' Oro is a pretty good horse herself.
Orginally trained by Larry Jones, she's now trained by Larry's wife Cindy. She finished second as a maiden in a stakes race at two, and last year won the BES before finishing second in the Susan's Girl and running into the talented Careless Jewel in the Delaware Oaks. She's coming off a win in the Baykoa at Oaklawn, and she'll be running on Preakness day in the Gallorette.
And of there's Rachel who was 8 for 8 with wins in the KY Oaks, Preakness, Mother Goose, Haskell, and Woodward. Yes she's gotten off to a little bit of a slow start as a four year old, but niether second place finish was as bad as it seems. I would give her one more shot.
Here are Payton's BES win and Rachel's Preakness
Has any stallion swept a TC race and the filly version (KY Oaks, BES and Acorn) the same year? Or is MDO the first last year with Payton and Rachel?
I'll have my Preakness and undercard picks tomorrow night
