Horse of the Year in Perspective

Well Monday is the big day, when we will find out who is the 2009 Horse of the Year. Will it be the Amazon from the West Zenyatta, or the Princess of the East Rachel Alexandra. As I've said before, I would love to see a tie between them. And in the end, HOY doesn't matter? You are probley thinking to yourself, your nuts Rachel. Have you lost your mind? No I have not, and someone agrees with me on this.

Amanada Duckworth, who I think used to run the Barbaro Brothers blog for Bloodhorse.com, wrote the following article for ESPN (Why Horse of the Year Doesn't Matter). Here are a few quotes from there that I liked.

"Their runners' legacies cannot be tarnished because it is guaranteed that both will be remembered in the annals of racing history, Horse of the Year or no."

"At the moment, we are all victims of proximity, but racing's past is littered with horses that warranted being crowned Horse of the Year but lost out to an equally deserving foe. Alydar, Easy Goer, and Silver Charm are just a few examples of horses that happened to race in the wrong years but were still extremely talented runners. "
"The biggest tragedy of the Rachel/Zenyatta saga isn't who loses when they announce Horse of the Year, but rather the fact they never met on the track."
These are just three quotes taken from the article to show that it doesn't matter. She goes on to compare Zenyatta to the undefeated Personal Ensign, who probley would have HOY if not for Alysheba (who had lost the year before to Ferndiand) and Rachel Alexandra to Smarty Jones who would have been HOY had Ghostzapper not won the Classic. Another thing, HOY for females isn't as important as it is for males. Even with a male HOY, it's not that important because the horse could be a gelding or be sterile (ie Cigar).

However, the bickering between Rachel fans and Zenyatta fans continues. I personally can't wait till Monday when this will be all done and settled. Will there be backlash? Of course what do you expect, but I do think people will be civil about it.

I would like to also announce that there will be a live chat on Monday starting at 7:00pm EST (Eastern Standard Time). We will be talking about the Eclipse Awards and the chat will end at the end of the award ceremony.

I'll be back tomorrow with a weekend preview post.
