It's been one of the worst weeks for horse racing, not only did we lose El Prado and Summer Squall, but just today Cryptoclearence, and Kona Gold.
Cyptoclearence ran in the 1987 Triple Crown behind the great Alysheba in two races, and Bet Twice in all three. He was second in the Belmont and Travers that year, however like Alydar got revenge for not winning a TC race, "Crypto" would as well. In 1998, Victory Gallop would out nose Real Quiet to deny "The Fish" a Triple Crown (However even if Fish had gotten the nose win, he more then likely would have been DQ'ed). Cryptoclearence also sired Delaware Handicap runner up Lila Page, and AR and LA Derby winner Crypto Star.
Kona Gold was the 2000 runner up for Horse of Year (winner was Breeder's Cup Classic winner Tiznow). Kona won the Breeder's Cup Sprint that year as a six year old and would go on to win stakes races at eight and nine respectivly. He also spent some time as his trainer, Bruce Headly's pony before moving to Kentucky Horse Park last year.
It's been one of the worst weeks losing three pretty important US sires, broodmare Haveaheavenlytime, broodmare Laughing Look (who is out of a half sister to Ruffian), stallion Ishiguru, and a champion sprinter. The old saying is "Things come in threes", in this case things come in sixes.
The Gallant Bloom is this weekend, and is expected to be the final East Coast start for Indian Blessing. Keep an out for Sara Louise, who won the Victory Ride last time out. Lets see how the last horse (male or female) to defeat a certin Medaglia d'Oro daughter does against older horses. There is a slight chance I may head out to Delaware Park tomorrow, however it all depends on what time I get out of work and if I have to go fix my grandma's computer (long and complicated story). The reason I would be going is that there is a MDO colt that I'm excited to see, his name is Laus Deo and he'll be running in a maiden race for 2yo's. Starting on Monday I will be previewing the Jockey Gold Cup and the Goodwood, these two races this year will be featuring Mine That Bird (Goodwood) and Summer Bird (Jockey Gold Cup).
