Back in 2007, I saw a picture of the Include colt Prom Shoes. Shortly afterwards I started to follow him and his arch rival Jonesboro. Prom Shoes was trained by William "Jinks" Fires who had also trained his family members, but didn't have a "big horse"... until this year. Flash foward to this past Saturday. Archarcharch wins the Arkansas Derby with Jon Court in the saddle for his owner Robert Yagos and trainer Jinks Fires. Unfortanlly the weather was horrible around here, and the feed on my computer kept freezing so I had to just relay on Twitter. It wasn't the prettiest win (or best call, but I'll talk about that another day), but I was estatic to see him get the win. Here it is:
The good thing is that Jon who last year won the AR Derby with Line of David and then was dumped for another rider, will remain on Archarcharch this year. Then again it helps that Jinks is his father in law. He could be a horse who has a big chance come the first Saturday in May. Hoping he moves foward from this race. Go Archarcharch!

Night Racing at it's best
Tomorrow night is the first night racing at Churchill Downs for the year, this will be a good test for later on in the year when the BC Ladies Classic (aka the Distaff) will be run with the light on. However, tomorrow's night's stakes race is a turf race, and I would like to preview it tonight, because it has some names people may remember.

Nominations close Friday, June 4, 2010 with no fee. $300 supplementary nominations may be made at time of entry. $100 to enter. Three Year Olds, 118 Lbs. Older, 125 Lbs. Non-winners of a graded sweepstakes on the turf in 2010, allowed 2 Lbs.; $45,000 at a mile or over on the turf in 2010, 4 Lbs.; two races other than claiming since December 25, 2009, 6 Lbs. The field will be limited to 10. If more than 10 entries pass the entry box preference will be given to gradedstakes winners, then highest 2009-2010 earnings. Closed Friday, June 4, 2010 with 28 nominations. (If deemed inadvisable by management to run this race over the turf course, it will be run on the main track at One and One Sixteenth mile.). Flying Private ran in last year's Triple Crown series and has done well on dirt this year. Yate's Black Cat is an old time turf horse who should not be taken lightly, really disapointed to see Prom Shoes in this race since turf is not really his favorite surface, and it's at Churchill while his hometrack, one of his worst. Tizdejavu is an interesting horse who was reguarded as the top turf 3yo a few years ago. Furthest Land should win this race, he is the defending BC Dirt Mile (although it's never run at a mile until this year) winner. I think getting him at his perfered distance (a mile to a mile and sixteenth) will get him back to the Winners Circle.
I'll have the Weekend Preview post tomorrow as planned, however I felt that this deserved it's own post. Don't forget to vote in the HRBA final ballot (something I've ment to mentioned, but have forgotten). The Ballot and all of the info can be found here.

Under the Radar: Bell's Shoes
All of the Kentucky Oaks talk has been about Blind Luck and Christine Daae, however there is a filly that is coming under the radar. No she hasn't won a stakes race yet, but she could be one of the favorites for the Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn. Yes it took her six races to break her maiden, but she finished third in the Martha Washington Stakes. She is the Mineshaft filly Bell's Shoes, and happens to be from a family that adores Oaklawn.
Bell's Shoes is out of the King of Kings mare Isabell's Shoes, a stakes winner in her own right (Martha Washington back in 2005, then finished fifth in the Honeybee behind future BC Distaff winner Round Pond). Isabell is out of the Phone Trick mare Pink Shoes (also a stakes winner, Gowell Stakes and Martha Washington Stakes), thus making her a half sister to stakes winners Wildcat Shoes, and Prom Shoes. Of course the latter being G2 placed (2nd in the 07 Peter Pan Stakes) and the winner of 2 stakes at Oaklawn (the Fifth Season Stakes in 08 and last year's Essex Handicap. He finished third in this year's Essex and just ran in this year's G3 Razorback Handicap).
It did take Bell's Shoes a while to break her maiden, but she finished out of the top three only once (even then she still took home a check as she finished fifth). The Martha Washington was her first try against stakes company, and she finished third behind Decelerator and Eva Giselle. She went off as the second longest shot and was only beaten by 2 ¼ lengths, finishing in front of Shotgun Gulch who won the prep for the Martha Washington. Could Bell's Shoes upset Blind Luck in the Oaks? She has to do well in the Honeybee and in the Fantasy to have a chance to Run for the Lilies. Although, if the current history of the Fantasy holds up, she has a great shot of doing so (two of the last three winners of this prep are Eight Belles and Rachel Alexandra, also a winner of this race happens to be Round Pond). Only time will tell weather or not she will follow in the footsteps of great horses who have run at Oaklawn.

The Forgotten Weekend
This weekend was pretty much a bust, with rain in California and snow on the East Coast. Many tracks canceled thus canceling stakes races. This hurts the California horses who now lose time to get ready for their next races. With that being said we still had some nice stakes races to talk about.
Whirlaway: Unfortanlly Eightyfiveinafifty blew a turn thus blowing his chances to win (his jockey was taken to the hospital, Eighty reportly only needed a few stitches. Hopefully he'll be back!). Pepi Knows won the race, I assume that the Gotham is next for him.
Gulfstream Turf: Take the Points crossed the line first, however was DQ'ed to fifth after cutting off Yate's Black Cat in the stretch. Thus pushing Court Vision to the win. Obviously it was disapointing to see TTP be taken down, but I personally think he deserved to be.
Donn: Quality Road won in a track record with a visually impressive proformance. However, I would like to say how proud I am of Dry Martini and Delightful Kiss! I somewhat hope their connections decide to point them to the Oaklawn Handicap as that race could come up on the light side.
Essex: No one was going to catch Racing Bran, but I'm very proud of Prom Shoes' 3rd place finish. I think 1 or 2 more jumps he would have caught Win Willy for second. The Razorback is going to be an interesting race, as I expect we'll see the 1-2-3 from this race go into the prep for the OakCap.
This is going to be a bit of an odd week as Road to the Roses is expected to start. Unfortanlly the site is not up yet, so hopefully in the upcoming days it will be. When that information is up, I'll set up a league for TC readers and we'll go from there.
