My little project

So orginally I was going to be doing some research on the Triple Crown winners and their relatives. Then I relised that in-breeding has happend and that would be a pain in the ***. So I went with plan B, and that is I'm doing a spreadsheet off one of my favorite horses offspring. Now a little bit of a background on this horse, he ran against the likes of Curlin, Street Sense and Rags to Riches, finishing 1st and 2nd (Street Sense), 2nd and 3rd (Curlin) and 4th (Rags to Riches) against them. He also defeated Teuflesburg, Sedgefield, First Defence and EZ Warrior. I'm talking about Hard Spun!

Here is what I've got so far:

It's still a work in progress and will take awhile to finish up. Also these are just the 2009 foals, I also have a section on the 2010 foals, but that won't become publically published until next year. If anyone knows of any Hard Spun foal that is not on this list as of right now, please leave a comment in this blog post. About every two weeks I'll post an updated spreadsheet, so stay tuned for details.

In other news:
Queen's Plate draw is on Thursday, Woodbine Oaks 1-2 Milwaukee Appeal and Tasty Temptation could go. MA will try to become the second filly from her sire Milwaukee Brew to run in the Queen's Plate (last year's runner up was also a MB filly, Ginger Brew), while TT will try to become her sire Medaglia d'Oro's second TC race winning filly in two months (Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness being the first). Three American based jockeys will come in for the Queen's Plate as California based Russell Baze (The World's Winningest Jockey) and Mike Smith (runner up in the Preakness on Mine That Bird), as well as New Jersey based Stewart Elliott (who will ride Milwaukee Appeal if she goes) are the invaders. I should note Baze and Elliott are orginally from Canada, however I believe Russell spent most of his life in Washington State.

Also Quality Road has been moved to Todd Pletcher's barn, link. While Rach is so ready for the Mother Goose, link.

Finally Lentantor (Dynaformer x La Ville Rouge by Carson City) had his first workout today, the younger brother of Barbaro and Nicanor went :38 for three furlongs at Fair Hill. My guess is we will see him in a 2yo race at Delaware (if he's ready) sometime later this year.

Delaware Park here I come!

I’m hopeful that tomorrow will be my first time to Delaware Park for the season. It’s a nice card despite the lack of stakes this season. However, the field sizes are nice sizes. That could be attributed to the new racing secretary Pat Pope. Here is a preview of tomorrow’s card at Delaware. To find all the horses that are on the card, please click here. The Morning Line odd are in parenthesis. I include a few notes on some of the races.

Picks

Race 1: Eastern Melody (8-1), Bound To (3-2), This Kitty’s Mine (4-1)

Race 2: Dancerama (6-1), Scary Appeal (7-2), Gift from the Sea (8-1)
Scary Appeal is a half sister to 2007 DE-Certified 2yo male Champ Scary Trip.

Race 3: Unforgettable Gal (3-1), Music is My Life (8-1), Silverdollardella (15-1)

Race 4: Smarty’s Gold (10-1), Uncle Nick (8-1), Twisted Vision (9-2)
Smarty’s Gold’s mom Mandy’s Gold ran in the Delaware Handicap in the early 2000’s. Of course his dad is the one and only Smarty Jones.

Race 5: Spooky Mulder (9-5), Vaya Con Dios (8-1), Man in Grey/True Wink (coupled entry) (5-1)
The old man gets it done. His trainer (Scott Lake) and Man in Grey and True Wink’s trainer (Tim Richey) are in a tight battle for top trainer.

Race 6: Whistlejacket (8-1), Newport (7-2), Mavin Giles (10-1)
Whistlejacket is coming out of the same race as Nicanor’s maiden win.

Race 7: Go Hide and Watch (2-1), Level With Me (12-1), Shirien (3-1)

Race 8: My Heart Skips (8-1), Fries (7-2), Jor El (9-2)

Race 9: Disguise (7-2). Rabbit Tracks (8-1), Footloose Man (10-1)
Disguise shares a breeder with Quality Road and Saint Liam.

Race 10 (Arabian): I should note that this is the final leg for the Triple Crown for Arabians. And it’s possible that it could happen with Qjuick Sand PW (7-5) so he’s my pick to get the Triple Crown.

On June 13 I will have a Post Triple Crown Live Chat starting at 3:00 pm. Posters can give their thoughts and ask questions. The Chat will go about an hour in length, maybe a little bit more if there is a lively discussion going on.

Also after the Belmont, I will be taking a little bit of a break (about 2-3 days). While on this break, I will be working on a pedigree project. The plan focuses on The 11 Triple Crown winners, Breeder’s Cup Classic winners and Breeder’s Cup Distaff winners. Basically what I’m going to do is research their offspring and sometime in the future, I will put it in a PDF file and put it up on the website. So sometime within the next 3 to 4 months, it should be up online. Wish me luck!

Edit: 11:27 pm: Rachel Alexandra will skip the Belmont and wait till most likely the Mother Goose. I wanted to get this in before I went to sleep tonight. A full post about what I think of this and her Vogue shoot coming tomarrow.
