Note: Going to the week before the Breeders' Cup, I will be doing Pedigree Look posts on former winners of Breeders' Cup races. Today's post is 2002 BC Turf co-winner Johar!

Profile: In the 28 year history of the Breeders' Cup, there has been 1 dead heat. That was in 2003 in the Turf at Santa Anita between the defending champ High Chaparral (IRE) (Saddler's Wells) and Johar (Gone West) who won the Hollywood Derby the year before as a 3yo, but was coming into the race off a runner up finish to Stormin Home (GB) (Machiavellian) in the Clement Hirsch. Johar helped his trainer Richard Mendella win 4 races on the day (both of the Juvenile races (Action This Day and Halfbridled), and the Classic (Pleasantly Perfect)).

Johar started his career as a 3yo. It took him 3 chances before he broke his maiden and then followed it up with an allowance win. While he finished 2^nd in the Will Rogers Stakes in June of 2002, his first stakes win wouldn't happen till that October in the Oak Tree Derby. He would end that year with the win in the for mentioned Hollywood Derby.  

Standing at Mill Ridge for $2,500 this past season, he hasn't had the success that he had on the track. Although he has sired millionaire Keertana and Canadian champion 2yo Tu Endie Wei.

Sire

Johar is by Gone West (Mr. Prospector). He won the Dwyer and was the runner up in the Wood Memorial and Peter Pan. As a sire, Gone West also sired of Mr. Greeley, Elusive Quality, Dance Parade, and Da Hoss.

Gone West's sire Mr. Prospector (Raise a Native) is one of the most important sire's around the world. The runner up of the Derby Trail, he was also second in the Firecracker and Carter. He is the sire of Afleet, Forty Niner, Aldebaran, Chester House, Queena and many others. His dam Gold Digger (Nashua) is a multiple stakes winner and is also the dam of stakes winners Gold Standard (Sea Bird (FR)) and Lillian Russell (Prince John).

His dam Secrettame (Secretariat) is G2 placed. Other then Gone West, she is the dam of G2 winner Lion Cavern (Mr. Prospector). Her dam Tamerett (Tim Tam) is also the dam to multiple G1 winner in England and Champion Known Fact (In Reality), and G1 winner Tentam (Intentionally).

Dam

Johar's dam is Windsharp (Lear Fan), a stakes placed mare in France and G1 placed in US. Other then Johar, she is the dam of G1 winner Dessert (Storm Cat).

Her sire Lear Fan (Roberto) is a G1 winner in France and G1 placed in England. As a sire, he has Chopinina, Vacare, Lear's Princess, and Shinko Edward among others. His dam Wac (Lt. Stevens) finished second in the Ashland and is the dam of G2 placed Pirate Army (Roberto) and G3 placed Easy Miner (Mr. Prospector).

Her dam Yes She's Sharp (Sharpen Up (GB)) won twice in her career and had Windsharp before being exported to Venezuela. Her dam Yes Sir (Sir Gaylord) is a stakes winner and is a 1/2 sister to G1 placed Island Kiss (Hawaii (SAF).

Normally I wouldn't do this, but since there is no Weekend Preview this week, I thought I would put it now. A few notes, tomorrow is the final Juvenile preps for the BC on the East Coast with the Champagne and Frizette at Belmont and Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland. Also tomorrow is the Shadwell Mile with Wise Dan and the Jamaica with Dullahan and Summer Front at the same two tracks respectively. Sunday will be a monster day as it will be the Arc in France with Orfeve, Camelot (with Frankie!!), St. Nicolas Abbey (who is prepping for a BC defence), Bayrir (who could also be a BC contender) among others. In the US it's SA Championship at Santa Anita and the Spinster at Keeneland.

Breeders Cup Vault- 2003 Breeders' Turf

Saddler's Wells and Gone West, two of the most profilic stallions in the World. Of course Saddler's Wells is the sire of horses such as Galileo, Beat Hallow, El Prado, Islington, In the Wings and many others. Gone West is the sire of Speightstown, Elusive Quality, Zaftig, Came Hone, Proud Citizen, Mr. Greeley along with many others. However, on October 25, 2003 Saddler's Wells and Gone West would become the only two stallions whose foals deadheated for first in a Breeders' Cup race.

That race would be the Breeders' Cup Turf. High Chapparral, a son of Saddler's Wells was defending his BC Turf title that he had won the year before as a 3yo at Arlington Park. Owned by Coolmore and trained by Aiden O' Brian, he was coming off a loss in the Arc. Johar the son of Gone West was owned by The Thoroughbred Corp and trained by Richard Mandella was coming off a second place finish in the Clement L. Hirsch behind Storming Home who would go off as the favorite in the Turf.

As the gates opened, Balto Star and Toccet set the early pace, High Chapperral sat towards the back of the pack and Johar was trailing early. As they made their way to the front stretch for the first time Balto Star was still in the lead with The Tin Man in second, our two heros where mid pack and last going into the backstretch. However there was some eventfulness as Sulamani got caught in some traffic and took a stumble, but was able to remain in the race. As soon as they hit the backstretch, High Chapperral started to make his move and on the turn, Johar started his. As they hit the top of the stretch, The Tin Man was in the lead, but he would be would be passed by Falbrav. High Chapperral was starting to near the front with Johar flying, those three hit the wire together. In the end, it would be High Chapperral and Johar dead heating for first and Falbrav and unlucky third place finish.

The BC Turf would be land High Chapperal his second Eclipse Award, as for Johar well that was win #3 on the day for Dick Mandella who would go on to finish the day with four wins (Halfbridled, Action This Day, Johar and Plesantly Perfect), the most for one trainer on Breeders' Cup day.

High Chapperal stands in Europe at Coolmore's Ireland location while Johar stands at Mill Ridge in Kentucky.
