So Now What?

Triple Crown races are over and now it's time to focus more on the Older Horses for the next few week. So this is what will be happening.

* Starting this weekend I will be having previews on Furlongs and Horses for the following races:

- Queen Anne (Royal Ascot)
- St. James Palace (Royal Ascot)
- Obeah Stakes (Delaware)
- Irish Derby (Curragh)
- Mother Goose (Belmont)
- Iowa Derby & Oaks (Prairie Meadows)

This in addition to the BC F&H videos that will be done, but for that it's only 2 that will be recorded later this year (the Obeah will be up on Friday, Royal Ascot videos will be up this weekend as well as long as the cards are drawn)

Also there will be a Pedigree Roundtable which I'll have more information on later this week (I'm waiting to here from one person and need to firm up a day of recording).

Pedigree Look: California Chrome

Name: California Chrome
Year Born: 2011
Color: Chestnut
Sex: Colt

Profile: Funny Cide and Smarty Jones, both are Derby and Preakness winners who came up short in the Belmont. Both are also responsible for bringing fans (such as myself) into the sport, and both are from what horse racing elitists would say "the wrong side of the tracks". California Chrome fits that same story line. Born in California, he has won the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Next week, he will be facing the Belmont Park starting gate and possibly a mile and half away from becoming the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

California Chrome started his career with breaking his maiden in his second start at Hollywood Park. After finishing 6th in the Willard L. Proctor, he won the Graduation Stakes at Del Mar. After two more 6th place finishes, he would win the King Glorious Stakes which was the final stakes race to ever be held at Hollywood. He has won every race since including the San Felipe in addition to the three previous races mentioned. Here is that SA Derby win:




Sire

Lucky Pulpit (Pulpit) won 3 races in 22 starts. He would win a small stakes at Arlington in 2005 after finishing 2nd in the Santa Catalina the year before. Other than California Chrome, he is the sire to stakes winners Luckarack and Gatheratthealter.

Pulpit (A.P. Indy) won both the Bluegrass and Fountain of Youth before finishing 4th in the Derby behind Silver Charm in 1997. As a sire, he has had many great horses. They include G1 winners Tapit (who has become a top class sire himself), Power Broker, Pyro, and Purge. His dam Preach (Mr. Prospector) is a G1 winner and the dam to stakes placed Tell It (Storm Cat). Her dam Narrate (Honest Pleasure) is a stakes winner and the dam to stakes placed Lecture (Seeking the Gold). Thus Preach is also a full sister to Yarn (Mr. Prospector) the dam to G1 winner Minardi (Boundary) and G2 winner Tale of the Cat (Storm Cat), Myth (Ogygian) the dam to G1 winner Johannesburg (Hennessy), and stakes winner Spunoutacontrol (Wild Again) the dam of G2 winner Fed Biz (Giant's Causeway). This  is the same female family as G3 winner Announce (Forty Niner) and G2 winner Region (Devil's Bag).

Lucky Soph (Cozzene) won once in her career which was in Europe. A Cal bred like her now famous grandson, she is also the the dam to stakes placed Drewman (Unbridled). Lucky's dam Lucky Spell (Lucky Mel) is a G3 winner. However, she is most known for being the dam of Trolley Song (Caro (IRE)) a winner of 1 start in 7 starts. However she is best known for being the dam to a pair of full brothers. Unraced Spanish Steps (Unbridled) who is the sire to G1 winner Little Mike and G1 winner as well as very successful sire Unbridled's Song (Unbridled). Also hailing from this female family is Seattle Song (Seattle Slew), the broodmare sire for Tiznow (Cee's Tizzy) and his sisters the dams of Paynter (Awesome Again) and Oxbow (Awesome Again).

Dam

Love the Chase (Not for Love) won once in six starts. California Chrome is her only runner to date, but has two full siblings (both fillies) to him as well.

Not for Love (Mr. Prospector) is stakes placed. Among his foals include G2 winner Love of Money, stakes winners Shades of Sunny and Saay Mi Name among many others. His dam Dance Number (Northern Dancer) is the dam to G1 winner Rhythm (Mr. Prospector) and G1 placed Offbeat (Fappiano). This makes Not for Love a full brother to stakes winner Get Lucky (Mr. Prospector) who is the grandam to Derby and Belmont runner up Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) and Derby winner Super Saver (Maria's Mon). Dance Number is a 1/2 sister to G1 winner Private Account (Damascus) who is also the sire of Personal Ensign, as well as stakes placed Polish Numbers (Danzig).

Chase It Down (Polish Numbers) won once in nine starts. Her winningest and highest earner is So Ya Know (Allen's Prospect). Her dam Chase the Dream (Sir Ivor) is a stakes winner and the dam to stakes winner Amourette (El Gran Senor). The latter is the dam to G3 placed Lemonade Kid (Lemon Drop Kid). This is the same female family as G1 winner Big Jag (Klevan).

Upcoming Pedigree Looks and Other News

I've been a bit lazy when it comes to PL's lately, and I appoligze. I think it has to do with my new monthly posting instead of every other week and/or every week. No matter! They will be returning in April and will continue to go monthly. Here is the run down for the next 4 months.

April: Better Than Honour
May: Derby and Oaks winners (unless I've already done their pedigrees (thorough sibs), then it would be the runners up and so on)
June: Met Mile winner
July: Delaware Handicap winner

I had planned to do an international horse, but really couldn't narrow one down (yes it was really that difficult). Maybe in August that will be the plan since most of the month will be a little bit of a lull for the 3yo's (with the exception of the Haskell and Travers of course).

The second MMDS poll will be going up tomorrow, if you haven't voted yet please do! It closes Sunday at Noon.

I will be having a video preview of the Florida Derby next week and possibly the Dubai World Cup, but I can't guarantee that.

Pedigree Look: Mucho Macho Man

Name: Mucho Macho Man
Year Born: 2008

Profile: You could say that Mucho Macho Man (Macho Uno) has been surrounded by miracles almost his entire life. See he was born basically dead on June 15, 2008 and has been surprising people ever since. One would think that he would be unraced at 2 due to his late birhtday, but he made his first start at Calder in July of 2010 where he finished second to future Delta Jackpot winner Gourmet Dinner. Soon afterwards, he was partially bought and moved from William White to Tim Ritvo. It would take him two more tries before he broke his maiden at Monmouth (in that maiden breaker he defeated Pants On Fire (who I'll talk about later in the post) and future BC Dirt Mile winner Tapizar). Soon after his win though, Tim took a job at Gulfstream Park. Thus he needed another new trainer. However, this time he didn't change barns as Tim's wife Kathy had taken over. Just two years before Kathy had recieved a heart transplant after she was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. Mucho finished his 2yo season with two runner up finishes in the Nashua and Remsen behind To Honor and Serve.

His three year old season started with a 4th place finish in the Holy Bull. He then headed to the Fair Grounds where he won the Risen Star before finishing 3rd in the LA Derby behind Pants On Fire. After finishing third behind Animal Kingdom in the KY Derby he would finish 6th behind Shackleford in the Preakness and 7th behind Ruler On Ice in the Belmont. That last race was just days before his actual third birthday and he would miss the summer and major fall races before returning in an Allowance race at Aqueduct which he won.

Four year old season started off with two wins at Gulfstream in the Sunshine Millions Classic and Gulfstream Park Handicap. He then finished third in the Alysheba behind Successful Dan (whose little brother Wise Dan won HOY honors) and Fort Larned. He would then pick up a win at Belmont in the Suburban where he would finally defeat his longtime nemesis To Honor and Serve, however the glory would be short lived as in his next race he would once again be defeated by THAS, this time in the Woodward at Saratoga. His final race of the year would be the Breeders' Cup Classic where he finished second to Fort Larned and finish in front of the likes of Flat Out, To Honor and Serve, Game On Dude and Ron the Greek. That marked the third year in a row where his then jockey Mike Smith had finished either first or second in the biggest race of the year for 3yo and up.

Five year old campaign didn't start according to plan as he was eased in the slop at Gulfstream in his Sunshine Millions defense. He would then finish third in the Criminal Type at Belmont before finishing third in the Whitney on Saratoga's 150th birthday. Then it was off to Santa Anita where he was so close the year before in the Classic and took down the Awesome Again defeating Paynter. Finally it was a return to the Classic with Gary Stevens (who had unretired earlier this year and was also aboard for the AA win) in the irons, Mucho was able to hold off the Travers winner and future Clark winner Will Take Charge in a photo finish. His win made Kathy Ritvo the first woman to train a Classic winner and only the fifth female trainer overall to win a Breeders' Cup race. Mucho Macho Man will be returning next year as a six year old to have to chance to join Tiznow as the only back to back Breeders' Cup Classic winners. Here is his Classic win:



Mucho Macho Man picked up nominations for Horse of the Year and Older Male for this year's Eclipse. He also won the Vox Populi Award. He will start his six year old campaign this upcoming Saturday in the Sunshine Millions Classic.

Note: Kathy's older brothers trainer Mike and jockey Nick Petro have raced at my hometrack Delaware Park for quite awhile now.

Sire

Macho Uno (Holy Bull) is a BC winner himself winning the Juvenile in 2000 and was also the Champion 2yo that same season. He would also pick up wins in the PA Derby and Mass. Handicap in his career. As a sire his best foals include G1 winner Macho Again (who was second to Big Brown in the 08 Preakness and gave Rachel Alexandra all she could handle before finishing 2nd to her in the 09 Woodward), G2 winner Macho Macho, as well as G3 winner in Panama and G1 winner in the States Private Zone.

Holy Bull (Great Above) won 13 of his 16 starts and made over $2 million in his career. He was named the 1994 Horse of the Year and 3yo colt. Along the way the races he won included the Futurity, Florida Derby, Bluegrass, Met Mile, Haskell, Travers and Woodward along with several other stakes races (sadly in his final race, the 1995 Donn he was a DNF, the winner that day was an up and comer who had won the NYRA Mile... Cigar). Holy Bull entered the Hall of Fame in 2001 and as a sire he has several successful foals. His most famous is 2005 KY Derby winner Giacomo (who was ridden by his regular rider Mike Smith), he also has G1 winners Bishop Court Hill, Confessional, and G2 winner Woke Up Dreamin. His dam Sharon Brown (Al Hattab) won 3 times in her 32 start career. Other then Holy Bull, she is the dam to stakes winner Winnie D (Crafty Prospector).

Macho is out of Primal Force (Blushing Groom (FR)) who won 4 of her eight starts. As a dam she also has 1998 Classic winner Awesome Again (Deputy Minister). Her dam Prime Prospect (Mr. Prospector) was a stakes winner. While Primal was her winningest foal, her highest earner was Glimmer of Gold (Slew O Gold) who is the dam to G3 winner Miss Ra He Ra (Rahy) who in turn is the dam to G2 placed Dancing Band (Dixieland Band).

Dam

Ponche de Leona (Ponche) is a stakes winner with eight wins in 38 starts in her career. Other then MMM, she is the dam to stakes placed Mucho Mans Gold (Gottcha Gold).

Ponche (Two Punch) is G3 placed and raced for the legendary Tartan Stable (in a little bit of a twist Tartan's owner William McKnight was the chairman for 3M, one of MMM's owners Patti Reeves used to work for 3M). Other then Leona, he is the sire to G2 placed Spensive and stakes winner Rebecca's Charm. His dam Street Ballet (Nijinsky) is G1 placed. This makes him a 1/2 brother to Japan Cup Dirt winner Fleetstreet Dancer (Smart Strike) and G2 placed in Ireland Street Rebel (Robellino). This is the same female family as KY Oaks winner Native Street (Native Dancer) and G1 winner River Special (Riverman).

Leona's dam Perfect and Proud (Nonparrell) won once in her career. Leona is her best foal win wise and money wise. By far Mucho Macho Man is the most successful horse from his female family.

Pedigree Look: One Dreamer

Name: One Dreamer
Year Born: 1988
Color: Gray

Sire: Relaunch

Broodmare Sire: Pretense

Profile: Even though One Dreamer (Relaunch)'s 1994 Breeders' Cup Distaff win was an upset (she was after all, the longest shot on the board), her race record is actually not that bad. An early May foal, One Dreamer made her first start at 3 and it took three starts for her to break her maiden. Her stakes debut wasn't until August 1992 in the Cleopatra Stakes at Arlington. Before that she had won her past three allowance races. She finished 5th that day (the runner up Diamond City is the dam of Catienus and the third place finisher Til Forbid is the granddam of Sara Louise). She would win her first starts race, the 1993 Arlington Breeders' Cup Handicap at the same track the next year (one of the horses she would defeat on that day is Words of War, the dam to No Matter What (dam of Rainbow View and Just as Well) and E Dubai (sire of defending Classic winner Fort Larned)). She would also pick up her first graded placing, 2nd in the Churchill BC Handicap which was a G2.

1994 would be her final year of racing where she picked up wins in the Louisville BC Handicap, Office Wife and Arlington BC Handicap. After a third place finish in the Rachel Jackson on turf, she was sent to the BC Distaff where she would face the likes of Hollywood Wildcat, Heavenly Prize and Sky Beauty where she beat them all.

That would be her final start of her career. She would finish with 12 wins in 25 starts with just over $1.2 million in her career. Although she wasn't as successful in the shed as she was on the track, One Dreamer's highest earning foal is W L's Legend (Woodman).

Sire

Relaunch (In Reality) is a G3 winner and is G1 placed. As a sire, he has Cee's Tizzy (sire of Tiznow and all of his sibs such as Tizso (dam of Paynter) and Tizamazing (dam of Oxbow)), stakes placed Arromanches, as well as G1 winners Waquoit, With Anticipation and BC Classic winner Skywalker.

In Reality (Intentionally) was runner up in the Preakness in 1967 to Damascus. He won the Met Mile and Florida Derby in his career as well. As a sire he has G2 winner Dignitas, G1 winner in England Known Fact, and BC Sprint winner Smile (of course best known now as the broodmare sire of Smarty Jones) among his foals. His dam My Dear Girl (Rough'n Tumble) was Champion 2yo in 1959. She is also the dam to G1 winner Superbity (Groshawk) and G1 placed Return to Reality (Intentionally). Her dam Iltis (War Relic) is also the dam to stakes winner Treasure Chest (Rough'n Tumble). It's thorough In Reality's great grandson Tiznow that this sire line continues and is one of the only, if not the only sire line that has Man O War on the sire's side and not the dam's.

Foggy Note (The Axe II) won ten times in her career. Other then Relaunch, she is the dam to G2 placed Bell O Reason (Hail to Reason). Thorough her dam Silver Song (Royal Note) comes Tapit (Pulpit) and Rubiano (Fappiano) (thorough her daughter Moon Glitter (In Reality)), and Glitterman (Dewan) (dam is Moon Glitter).

Dam

Creatively (Pretense) won three times in twelve starts. Other then Dreamer, she is the dam to G2 placed Lonely Girl (Relaunch), the dam of stakes winner Four Plus Four (Major Impact).

Pretense (Endeavour (ARG)) was a stakes winner and Champion Handicap Male in 1967. He is the sire of G1 placed Cassaleria, G1 winner Anne's Pretender, and G1 winner Sham (who of course is best known as the arch rival to Secretariat). He is his dam Imitation (GB)'s (Hyperion (GB)) best foal.

Betty Sherrill (Bagdad) was unraced in her career. Creatively is her best foal. Betty is a 1/2 sister to stakes winner Hot Oil (Damascus) (in an unrealated note, Hot Oil is the sire of a mare by the name of Amanda Bry, now known as Limerick who is owned by a Twitter friend of mine Heidi to read more about Lim here is a link to an article written by Three Chimney's Jen Roytz).

Pedigree Look: Cardmania

Name: Cardmania
Year Born: 1986
Color: Brown
Sex: Gelding
Sire: Cox's Ridge
Dam: L'Orangerie
Broodmare Sire: J O Tobin

Profile: Cardmania (Cox's Ridge) began his career in France where he struggled at first, before finding his niche in their claiming ranks. It wasn't until towards the end of his European portion of his career when he found his stride taking a G3 in Italy in his final start in the continent... at the moment. In November of 1991, he made his first US start at Hollywood Park in the Turf Express Handicap where he would finish third. In March of 1992, he would pick up his first US win in the Zooron Handicap at Santa Anita. He would then follow that win up with a G3 win in the Potrero Grande also at Santa Anita. He would go onto win the LA Handicap before moving back to Europe.

That would turn out to be disastrous as he was out of the top three in three starts there and then was returned to the US. Although it would end being over a year before he would pick up a win again, he would finish no worse then 5th for most of the 1993 season. In his last start before the Breeders' Cup, he would win the G3 Ancient Title at Santa Anita. Then came the Breeders' Cup Sprint where he would face the winner from the previous year Thirty Slews and Meafara who finished second. In the end though Cardmania would prevail over the filly Meafara by a head with Gilded Time. Here is that race:



Cardmania would win one more time in his career in the San Carlos which was right after his BC win. He was named Champion Sprinter in 1993 and finished third in his BC Sprint defence the next year. Cardmania died in 2012 at the age of 26.

Sire

Cox's Ridge (Best Turn) is the winner of the Met Mile in his career. He also finished second in the Whitney and third in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. As a sire, he also has Champion and mulitiple G1 winner Life's Magic, G1 placed Amathos and G1 winner De Roche among many others.

Best Turn (Turn-To) is a stakes winner. Other then Cox, his best foal is the wonderful filly Davona Dale. Also among his foals are G1 placed Super Cook. His dam Sweet Clementine (Swaps) is the granddam to G2 placed Miss Tokyo (Dewan). She is out of stakes winner Miz Clementine (Bull Lea) and appears to be the only foal for her dam. Miz Clementine is a full sister to mulitple Champion Two Lea (Bull Lea). Thus this is the same female family as Hall of Famer Tim Tam (Tom Fool).

Our Martha (Ballydonnell (GB)) won three times in 25 starts. Cox is her best foal, however she is also the dam to G3 placed Freeo (Tom Tulle). Corday (Carrier Pigeon), her dam is the granddam of stakes winner Rail Rider (Iron Warrior). This is the same female family as stakes winner Dubious (Chance Play).

Dam

L'Orangerie (J.O. Tobin) was unraced in her career. Other then Card is her best foal.

J.O. Tobin (Never Bend) like his grandson started his career in Europe. He would go onto win the Swaps race, thus the first horse to hand defeat the Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew (Bold Reasoning). He would also win the Californian in his career and be co-champion Sprinter in 1978. As a sire, he wouldn't be as successful, but he did have stakes winner Sitzmark. His dam Hill Shade (Hillary) is a stakes winner in Europe. She is also the dam to G1 winner in Europe Mysterious (GB) (Chepello (GB)), G2 placed Fairy Dance (Northern Dancer) and G2 placed Till You (Exclusive Native) among others. Hill Shade is a 1/2 sister to G2 placed in Europe Shady Fellow (Sir Gaylord).

Liska (FR) (Lyphard) won twice in eight starts. She is the dam to stakes winner Liska's Dance (running in Liska's Dance (Riverman). She is a 1/2 sister to multiple G1 winner in France and Champion Irish River (FR) (Riverman).

Breeders' Cup Pedigree Look Upcoming Posts

In honor of the 30th ani. of the Breeders' Cup, all of the Pedigree Look posts for the next 8 weeks will be winners of the race. There will be one a week on Thursdays leading up to the November 2nd and 3rd races. Due to the fact that the newer races (Dirt Mile, F/M Sprint ect.) do not have as many winners behind them, I will only be choosing 1 horse to cover those races. The other races, except for the Classic will have 1 horse to cover them (the Classic will have 2 horses as I will be out of town 1 Thursday and won't be able to do research on the horse more in depth). Pedigree Look: Rachel Alexandra

Name: Rachel Alexandra
Year Born: 2007
Color: Dark Bay/Brown

Profile: Racing was desperate. A year after Big Brown was eased in the Belmont and Eight Belles broke down in the Derby, more people turned away from racing. Then came along a horse who turned the racing world on it's side. A hero had risen... or should I say a heroine. Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d' Oro) went on to do things that a three year old filly had done in the past, but not in a long time. She ended her Horse of the Year winning season doing the impossible, defeating Older Males in a two turn Grade 1 race. She and Zenyatta helped turn the “Sport of Kings” into the “Sport of Queens”.

Rachel's career started at Churchill Downs where she would finish sixth in her debut (in a little bit of foreshadowing, the winner of that race Songtress was trained by her future trainer who she would make history with). She would break her maiden in her second start before finishing second in the Debutante Stakes at Churchill. After an slight injury had her miss the summer 2yo races, she returned in allowance at Keeneland which she won. Then a runner up finish in the Pocahontas before winning the Golden Rod, both of those races where at Churchill. It was after the Pocahontas that she would switch jocks from Brian Hernandez Jr. (who is now most known as the rider of Fort Larned) to Calvin Borel who had his greatest success in 2007 with Street Sense.

Her three year old season with her as one of the favorites for the Kentucky Oaks, she won the Martha Washington which is the first leg in Oaklawn's prep series. After winning for fun in the mud in the Fair Grounds Oaks, she returned to Oaklawn for the Fantasy which she won with ease. That set her for the Kentucky Oaks, even though many people thought that she should go to the Derby instead. Set off as the favorite, she did not disappoint the Oaks crowd by winning by 20 ½ lengths and almost setting a stakes record. Soon after her Oaks romp, she was bought in part by Stonestreet Stable who had owned 2007 Preakness and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Curlin). More importantly, she was moved from Hal Wiggins to Steve Asmussen.

The Preakness would be her next start, but there was some controversy when reportedly Mine That Bird (the winner of the Derby) and Pioneerof the Nile's (the runner-up) connections had tried to keep her out of the race. That failed miserably after Marylou Whitney (the owner of MTB's sire Birdstone) had told her trainer that she would remove her horse if it meant keeping Rachel out. The plan was dropped and Rachel went to the race... with Calvin in the saddle. She would defeat Mine That Bird by a diminishing length under his new rider Mike Smith (who of course was the regular rider of Zenyatta and Azeri). She was the first filly to win the race since Nelly Morse won 85 years before in 1924.

After skipping the Belmont, the Mother Goose would be her next race where she would demolish two other fillies (both who would go onto win G1's) in a stakes record and almost track record time. It was then on to the Haskell where she would face Belmont winner and future 3yo Male Champ Summer Bird, along with Munnings whose owners and trainer also had the last filly before Rachel to win a Triple Crown race in Rags to Riches. All she did there was defeat the boys in the slop and just missing the stakes and track record. In what would be her final start as a three year old, she faced older males in the Woodward. While most expected her to win the race, she would be facing several nice horses including G1 winners Bullsbay and Macho Again as well as UAE Triple Crown winner Asiatic Boy. She would defeat them all winning by a head. Here is that win.



The 2009 season got her 3yo Champion Filly honors and Horse of the Year over Zenyatta. Her 4yo season didn't go as planned, but she did pick up wins in the Flur de Lis and the Lady's Secret before ending her career with a runner up finish in the Personal Ensign. Her first foal Jess's Dream (Curlin) is a yearling and should make his first start sometime next year. She also has a Bernardini filly on the ground this year. Sadly Rachel had a complication after foaling the filly and is barren for the 2014 foaling season. It is unknown right now weather she will be able to continue her broodmare career.

Sire

Medaglia d' Oro (El Prado (IRE)) was one of the best 3yo and Older Horses of his generation. He won the Travers, Whitney and Donn Handicap at ages 3, 4 and 5. He was also the two time runner up in the Breeders' Cup Classic and was second in the Dubai World Cup as well. Other then Rachel he is the sire of G1 winners Plum Pretty (who also won the KY Oaks), Champagne d' Oro and Warrior's Reward.

El Prado (IRE) (Sadlers Wells) is a G2 winner in his native Ireland and was Champion 2yo in 1991 there. He is the sire of G1 winners Kitten's Joy (Turf Champion and turning out to be a good sire himself), Borrego, and Spanish Moon among others. His dam Lady Capulet (Sir Ivor) won the Irish One Thousand Guineas. She is also the dam to G1 placed in Ireland Entitled (IRE) (Mill Reef). Caps and Bells (Tom Fool), Lady Capulet's dam is also the dam to G2 winner in Ireland Sir Wimborne (Sir Ivor) and Drone (Sir Gaylord) the broodmare sire of both Charismatic (Summer Squall) and Grindstone (Unbridled) both of them Kentucky Derby winners. This is the same female family as G3 winner in England and Ireland Turkish Treasure (Sir Ivor).

Cappucino Bay (Bailjumper) is a stakes winner in her own right. She is the dam to stakes placed Expresso Bay (Metfield), G3 winner Naples Bay (Giant's Causeway) and Cappucino Kid (Pioneering) who now lives at Old Friends since 2008. Dubbed In (Silent Screen) won six times in 42 starts. Other then Cappucino, she is the dam to stakes winner Maharesred (Maheras).

Dam

Lotta Kim (Roar) is G2 placed. Rachel Alexandra is currently her only foal to race, but she also has a yearling Samantha Nicole (Medaglia d' Oro) who is owned by Stonestreet. Both Rachel and Samantha are named after Dolphus Morrison's (their breeder) granddaughters.

Roar (Forty Niner) is a G2 winner. As a sire, Roar has stakes winner Coach Jimi Lee and G2 winner Roar Emotion among his foals. His dam Wild Applause (Northern Dancer) is G1 placed. She is also the dam to G1 placed Yell (A.P. Indy) and G3 winner Blare of Trumpets (Fit to Fight). This is the same female family as Derby winner Sea Hero (Polish Navy), G1 placed Mackie (Summer Squall) and G1 winner Hero's Honor (Northern Dancer).

Kim's Blues (Cure the Blues) won 4 of her 24 starts. Among her foals, she is the dam to stakes winners High Blues (High Yield) and Lotta Rhythm (Rhythm). Her dam Early Decision (Lord Gaylord) is a stakes winner. This is the same female family as Belmont winner Hail to All (Hail to Reason).

Profile: Arlington Park chairman Richard Duchossois had never won the Beverly D, a race that is named in honor of his late wife. That is until 2010 when a filly bay the name of Eclair de Lune (GER) (Marchand de Sable) had won the race for him and Ron McAnally who is best known as the trainer of 2 time Arlington Million winner John Henry. Mr. Duchossois was quoted in saying that he wanted to win the race more then the Kentucky Derby.

Eclair de Lune started her career in France where she won twice and finished third in a Group 3 stakes. Sent to the US, She started her US career with 2 fourth place finishes before finishing second in the Modesty in the race before her Beverly D win. Sadly, she would never finish in the top 3 again in her career. Here is her Beverly D win:



Sire

Marchand de Sable (Theatrical (IRE)) won the Criterium de St-Cloud in France and stood his entire stallion career in the country. Other then Eclair de Lune, he is the sire of G1 winner in France and England Marchand d'Or (FR), G3 winner Stoneside (IRE) and G1 winner Commercante (FR).

Theatrical (IRE) (Nureyev) was second in the Irish Derby and won the Breeders' Cup Turf among many other G1's during his career. He had finished third as a 5yo in the Arlington Million. He is the sire of G1 winners Auntie Meme, Melbourne Cup winner Media Puzzle, Shakespeare, Hishi Amazon and Duda. His dam Tree of Knowledge (IRE) (Sassafras (FR)) is stakes placed in Ireland. She is the dam of  G1 winner in Japan Taiki Blizzard (Seattle Slew). Her dam Sensibility (Hail to Reason) is the granddam of multiple G1 winner and the winner of the Arlington Million Paradise Creek (Irish River (FR)).

Mercantile (FR) (Kenmare (FR)) was a stakes winner in France. According to Pedigree Query, Marchand was the only foal of hers who ran. This is the same female family as St. Ledger runner up Die Hard (GB) (Never Say Die).

Dam

Elegante (GER) (Acatenango (GER)) is a stakes winner in Germany. Eclair is her best foal.

Acatenango (GER) (Surumu (GER)) is a mulitple G1 winner in Germany including the German Derby. Among his foals include G1 winner in Germany and BC Turf runner up Borgia, G1 winner Fraulein (GB) and G1 placed Musketier (GER). However, in the US he is possibly best known as the broodmare sire of Derby and Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux (BRZ)). His dam Aggravate (GB) (Aggressor (GB)) is a G3 winner in England. She is also the dam to stakes winner in Germany Arado (GER) (Surumu (GER)). Profile: McDynamo was a decent allowance horse on the flat, but blossomed when he started his steeplechase career. On Friday, he joins Housebuster, Lure, Invasor (ARG) and Calvin Borel in the Class of 2013 for Racing's Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY. All the horses and Calvin deserve their places in the Hall, but McDynamo holds a special place in my heart.

Originally trained by his owner Michael Moran (who with his mom bred Hard Spun), he moved to steeplechase trainer Sanna Hendriks barn after a 6th place finish at Belmont in 2001. He would win his first three races over the jumps, including a G1 at Churchill. He would show that race was no fluke when he finished second in his next race. He would end his first year as a steeplechaser with a ninth place finish and another win.

2003 was his first big year where he went 3 for 3 including wins in the Breeders' Cup Steeplechase (which is no longer a BC race) and the Colonial Cup. He won his first Eclipse Award for Champion Steeplechaser. In 2004 he would make two starts where he would win the BCS once again. 2005 was his next big year where he would finish no worse then third while picking up BCS and Colonial Cup wins once again, along with another Eclipse Award. 2006 was when he only lost once, and picked up wins in the BC Grand National and Colonial once again along with what would be his final Eclipse Award. 2007 was made up three races where he finished in the top 3 only once. However, it would be in the race he dominated the Grand National winning it for the fifth time. He finished his career after a 6th place finish in the Colonial Cup.

Sire

Dynaformer (Roberto) won the 1988 Jersey Derby and Discovery Handicap. Of course it was as a sire where he made his name with sons such as Barbaro and Perfect Drift and daughters like Film Maker and Riskaverse.

His sire Roberto (Hail to Reason) won the Epsom Derby and the Coronation Cup in England. He was named a Champion in both the UK and Ireland three times. Among his foals include G1 winners Sunshine Forever, Script Ohio and Bob Back. His dam Bramalea (Nashua) won 8 races in her career. As a broodmare she is also the dam to stakes placed Mullineaux (Hail to Reason). This is the same female family as stakes placed Oh So Noble (Noble Nashua).

His dam Andover Way (His Majesty) is a G1 winner herself. Other then Dynaformer she is the dam to Alvear (Seattle Slew) who is the dam to G1 winner Offlee Wild (Wild Again), one of the few horses to defeat Funny Cide multiple times, as well as Black Speck (Arch) the dam of UAE Derby winner Lines of Battle (War Front). Andover Way's dam On the Trail (Olympia) of G1 placed Derby Creek Road (Roberto) who defeated John Henry three times.

Dam

McDynamo's dam Rondonia (Monteverdi (IRE)) was unraced in her career. Other then McDynamo, she is the dam to G3 winner Old Chapel (Dynaformer) and Russian stakes winner Radonezh (Barkerville).

Her sire Monteverdi (IRE) (Lyphard) won the Dewherst in England and was 2yo champion in both England and Ireland. Among his foals include stakes winner Niccolo Polo and G3 placed Warranty Applied. His dam Janina (IRE) (Match (FR)) is also the dam to stakes winner Jadana (IRE) (Pharly (FR)). Thus this is the same female family as G1 placed Jade Hunter (who of course is the sire to a Hall of Famer himself, Azeri).

Her dam Flying Carpet (Damascus) went unplaced in her career. She is the dam to stakes winner Winter Spirit (Icecapade). Pimento Dram (Cyane), Flying Carpet's dam is a stakes winner as well. Profile: The year is 2006, KY Derby 6th place finisher Showing Up was making his grass debut in the Colonial Turf Cup. His owners Lael Stables, needed something to cheer about as their Derby winner Barbaro was fighting for his life at New Bolton after being pulled up in the Preakness. Showing Up won the race by 3 1/4 lengths. The runner up in that race was a longshot who had just won a small stake in Texas. He would go onto become to of the best turf milers in the US in 2007 and 2008. His name is Kip Deville (Kipling).

Kip was born on May 3rd, 2003 in Oklahoma. He started his career by breaking his maiden at Remington Park before finishing fifth in a stakes at the same track. He would then race in some Allowance races winning once before winning a stakes race at Sam Houston. That was when he was put on the Derby trail, but finished ninth in the 2006 Rebel to Lawyer Ron. It was back to the grass where he won another stakes, this time at Lone Star before he was privately sold to IEAH which at the time was still a under the radar stable. Switched to Rick Dutrow, he would go onto finish sixth in the VA Derby to Go Between. His next win would be in October at Keeneland in the Bryan Station Stakes and ended the year with a sixth place finish to Showing Up in the Hollywood Derby and a win in the Sir Beaufort.

2007 started off with a bang with wins in the Kilroe Mile and Maker's Mark Mile. Then a rough patch hit with two off the board finishes before a 3rd place finish in the Oceanport Stakes and a runner up finish in the Woodbine Mile. Then on a soft turf at Monmouth Park, he would defeat Excellent Art, Nobiz Like Shobiz, and Galileo's little sister (Sea the Stars' big sister) My Typhoon in the BC Mile. Here is that race:



The next year, he would defend his Makers Mark title (where he had finally defeated Showing Up) and also won the Poker Handicap. After a fifth place finish in the Woodbine Mile, he would look like a winner in his BC Mile defense only to get run down by the 3yo Goldikova in the final yards (of course she would go onto win the Mile three years in a row before losing in her fourth attempt). His final win would be the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap where he would defeat Just as Well, Court Vision (who I will talk about under Kip's sire portion) and Red Rocks among others. He would end his career with three out of the top three finishes.

Sadly, Kip was euthanized on June 11, 2010 after developing laminitis eight months before. That was brought on due to a colic attack that caused his retirement.

Sire

Kipling (Gulch) won five times in 28 starts. He had finished off the board in all three of his stakes races that he participated in. Other then Kip, he is the sire of stakes winner Dreamsandvisions and stakes placed Kip Berries.

His sire Gulch (Mr. Prospector) was versitile as a racehorse. He finished in the top 6 in all three legs of the 1987 Triple Crown. What makes him even more impressive is that he won the Met Mile before the Belmont where he finished third. There where also runner up finishes in the Whitney and Woodward. The next year he would defend his Met Mile title and add BC Sprint title to his name as well to be named Champion Sprinter. As a sire, his best known foal is Derby/Belmont winner Thunder Gulch. He is also the sire of G3 winner Demarcation, stakes placed in Japan Star Chandelier and G1 winner in Japan Eagle Cafe. His dam Jameela (Rambunctious) won the Delaware Handicap in her career. (I did a profile on her when I did previous DelCap winners). Gulch was her best foal. She is a 1/2 sister to stakes placed Miss Croatoan (Roanoke Island). This is the same female family as G3 placed Sarah Percy (Uncle Percy).

His dam Weekend Storm (Storm Bird) was unraced in her career. Other then Kipling, she is the dam of BC Mile winner Court Vision (Gulch) who denyed Goldikova her fourth Mile win in a row, G1 placed in Hong Kong Garcia Marquez (Gulch) (who raced under the name Rainbow and Gold in HK) and stakes winner Smart Surprise (Smart Strike). Weekend Storm is a full sister to Preakness winner Summer Squall (Storm Bird), thus this makes her a 1/2 sister to Belmont and BCC winner A.P. Indy (Seattle Slew). Also hailing from this family is Belmont winner Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo) and G1 winner in England Wolfhound (Nureyev).

Dam

Klondike Kaytie (Encino) won 20 times in 63 races. She is also a stakes winner. Other then Kip, she is the dam to stakes winner Gotthard (Ghazi).

Encino (Nijinsky) was 3rd in the 1979 Hollywood Juvenile Championship. He is the sire to G2 placed Down Again, stakes winner Cold Trail and G2 winner The Names Jimmy. His dam Crimson Saint (Crimson Satan) is a G3 winner. She is also the dam to G1 winner in Europle and Champion in Ireland Royal Academy (Nijinsky), G1 winner Pancho Villa (Secretariat) and G1 placed Terlingua (Secretriat). The latter of course is most known for being the dam to G1 winner and super sire Storm Cat (Storm Bird). Thorough it's a different branch, thorough a mare named Cherokee Rose (Peter Pan) also hails the recent Derby winner Orb (Malibu Moon).

Kaytie's dam Charming Dawn (Vigors) was unraced. Kaytie is her best foal. Her dam High Charme (High Tribute) is a stakes winner. This is the same female family as stakes winner Up the Hill (Jacopo (GB)) (dam of stakes winner Pail of Water (Jack High)).

There was severe damage done to Orr's Family Farm and the training center that was connected to the farm. Profile: The year is 1989, the place is Belmont Park. Sunday Silence (Halo) is going for the Triple Crown, but is denied by the Derby and Preakness runner up Easy Goer (Alydar). That until this past Saturday was the only time that the Phipps family and their trainer Shug McGaughey had been in the Winner's Circle for a Triple Crown race. However, Orb changed that with his win in the Kentucky Derby. He got his career started with three straight loses at all three of the NYRA tracks. In those races he faced off against Vyjack (Into Mischief), Violence (Medaglia d' Oro), and Titletown Five (Tiznow), who where all the Derby trail this Spring. He finally broke his maiden at Aqueduct where among the horses he defeated was Revolutionary (War Pass) who of course finished third in the Derby. He would then go onto Gulfstream where he won an allowance, the Fountain of Youth and the Florida Derby. That led to Churchill Downs where he would go off as the favorite in the Derby in a field of 19.

Malibu Moon (A.P. Indy) won once in two starts before an injured pre-maturely ended his career. Starting out in Maryland, he would get his first champion Declan's Moon. Declan would be followed up with Delaware Oaks winner Moon Catcher, G1 winners Life at Ten, Ask the Moon, Devil May Care, and Eden's Moon.

His sire A.P. Indy (Seattle Slew) won the Belmont and Breeders' Cup Classic in 1992. He was named Horse of the Year that same year and went onto have a remarkable stallion career. He is the sire of the likes of Rags to Riches, Majestic Warrior (who is the sire of the Oaks winner Princess of Sylmar), Pulpit, and many others.

Macoumba (Mr. Prospector) is a G1 winner in France. Other then MM, she is the dam of Parker's Storm Cat (Storm Cat) who is the sire of turf sprinting sensation Ben's Cat, G3 placed Positively (Distorted Humor), and stakes placed Mutually Benefit (Dynaformer). Her dam Maximova (FR) is a G1 winner in France. She is also the dam of G1 winner in France Septieme Ciel (Seattle Slew) and G2 placed Maxigroom (Blushing Groom (FR)). Her dam Baracala (Swaps) is the dam of G1 placed in Ireland and Champion 3yo filly in France Vilikaia (Nureyev).

Lady Liberty (Unbridled) won 2 races in her career. With Orb being her highest earner, her second highest earner is Cause of Freedom (Alphabet Soup). She had a Flatter colt earlier this year.

Unbridled (Fappiano) won the 1990 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic. As a sire he has G1 winners Eddington, Empire Maker, Unbridled's Song, Banshee Breeze among many others. His dam Gana Facil (Le Fabuleux (FR)) won six races in her career. Other then Unbridled, she is the dam to G1 winner Cahill Road (Fappiano). Gana is a 1/2 sister to G3 placed Pentelicus (Fappiano). This is the same female family as the Hall of Famer and multiple champion Dr. Fager (Rough'n Tumble)

Mesabi Maiden (Cox's Ridge) won the 1996 Susan's Girl Stakes at Pimlico. Finishing right behind her that day was Cara Rafaela (Quiet American), all that she would do is become the dam to multiple G1 winner and Champion 3yo male Bernardini (A.P. Indy). Lady is her best foal. Her dam Steel Maiden (Damascus) is G3 placed and is the dam to stakes placed Pro Prospect (Forty Niner). Laughter (Bold Ruler), Steel's dam is the dam of G1 winner Private Terms (Private Account) and Laughing Look (Damascus), the dam of G1 winner Coronado's Quest (Forty Niner). This makes Lady Liberty's fourth dam (and Orb's fifth dam) Shenanigans (Native Dancer), a stakes placed filly in her own right. Profile: In thanks in part to 2004 Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones, PA breds have been more and more competitive in Graded Stakes races over the past several years. From Hard Spun to Fabulous Strike, to 2011 Oaks winner Plum Pretty. On Friday, Princess of Sylmar added her name to PA bred G1 winners list. The odd thing is, she in a way is the unlikeliest winner of them all. Named after the farm where she was foaled, Princess started her career with a fourth place finish at all places... Penn National. She broke her maiden at the same track in her next start. She would then go onto win her next three races on Aqueduct's inner track including picking up wins in the Busanda and Busher Stakes before finishing 2nd in the newly downgraded and moved Gazelle which is on the outer dirt track at the Queens racecourse. Sent off as the second longest shot on the board in the KY Oaks, she was at the back of the pack at the beginning before being masterfully ridden by Mike Smith who rode the legendary Zenyatta in his career thorough the pack to nail the 2yo Champion Beholder about 1/2 away from the wire. That gave her trainer Todd Pletcher his third Oaks winner of his career.

Sire

Her sire Majestic Warrior (A.P. Indy) won 2 races in his career. One of those two races was the Hopeful Stakes. As a sire Princess of Sylmar is his top foal to date, but he is only a 2nd crop stallion so much can change between now and later this year.

A.P. Indy (Seattle Slew) is one of the legendary racehorses and stallions in the world. Not only did he win the Belmont and BCC the same year, but he is also the sire of the likes of Rags to Riches, Bernardini, Malibu Moon (who I will be talking about later this week), and Pulpit. Weekend Surprise (Secretariat), his dam also has Preakness winner Summer Squall (Storm Bird) and Weekend Storm (Storm Bird) (the dam of Kipling (Gulch) who is the sire of my all time favorite BC winner Kip Deville) and BC Mile winner Court Vision (Gulch)) among her foals.

His dam Dream Supreme (Seeking the Gold) is a G1 winner herself. She is also the dam to stakes winners Crystal Current (A.P. Indy) and Evolutionist (El Prado (IRE)). Her dam Spinning Round (Dixieland Band) only had 4 foals before being killed by lightning in 1999. Like Dream Supreme she was a G1 winner.

Dam

Storm Dixie (Catienus) only won once in her career. She did though, finish second in the Crockadore Stakes for NYB fillies in 2007. Princess of Sylmar is her only foal to race to date according to Pedigree Query.


Catienus (Storm Cat) began his career in Europe before moving back to states. He would win a stakes at Delaware Park before finishing 2nd in the Suburban and 3rd in the Whitney in 1999. Among his foals include 2005 Belmont 3rd place finisher Nolan's Cat (who at the time was still a maiden) and G1 winner Precious Kitten (1/2 sister to Kitten's Joy). Profile: The saying "Once in a lifetime" is sometimes overused. However, in the case of one red colt, that might not be true. Secretariat (Bold Ruler) was born March 30, 1970 in Virginia. Despite his future greatness, Big Red as he was affectionately called did not break his maiden until his second start after finishing 4th in his debut at Aqueduct, he would go onto win the Sanford, Hopeful and Futurity at Saratoga and Belmont respectively. He would also win the Laurel Futurity that same year. In January of 1973, he made history by becoming the first 2yo to be named Horse of the Year (only one other horse has gotten HOY honors at two, Favorite Trick for his 1997 season).

For his three year old season, he would start off the year with wins in the Bay Shore and Gotham Stakes. After finishing third to his stablemate Angle Light and arch rival Sham in the Wood Memorial, he would head to the Kentucky Derby. Facing 12 other horses, Big Red didn't disappoint as he would win the race with Sham in second. One of the horses he would defeat in the Derby is Forego, who would go onto have his own legendary career and is considered one of the three greatest geldings of all time (along with Kelso and John Henry). His win in the Derby would set a new track record as well, and only Derby currently run under two minutes (Monarchos' win in 2001 is the closest to that record).

Next up would be the Preakness, where once again he would win with Sham in second. This race would at the time not set a record due to a timing issue. However in 2012, this was reversed to become a stakes record (at the time three horses held the record Louis Quatorze, Tanks Prospect and Curlin (who like Sec was a HOY winner).

Finally it was time for the Belmont. No horse since Citation had won the Triple Crown (Derby, Preakness and Belmont) twenty five years before. The pressure was on him to get it done. Not did he did so, well see for yourself.



That would set a record for a mile and a half on dirt and a winning margin record. Secretariat had won the Triple Crown.

Soon after the TC was over, he was back at work picking up another win this time at Arlington Park in the Arlington Invitational Stakes. However, he would then lose twice in the next three starts. First to Onion in the Whitney (who he would get revenge on in the Marlboro Cup in the next start) and then to Prove Out in the Woodward (both horses where trained by H. Allen Jerkens). It was then off to the grass for his final two starts of his career which he would win both of them (Man O' War and the Canadian International). He would retire with 16 wins in 21 starts and earnings of just over 1.3 million dollars.

As a sire, he wouldn't be as successful as he was as a runner. That being said, he did sire 1986 Horse of the Year Lady's Secret, 1988 Preakness and Belmont winner Risen Star and is the broodmare sire of both Storm Cat and A.P. Indy. Secretariat passed away in 1989 from laminitis complications (and was the most famous case until Barbaro passed from complications in 2007).

Sire

Bold Ruler (Nasrullah (GB)) was a stakes winner in his own right. Like Sec, he was Champion 3yo and Horse of the Year (1957) and is in the Hall of Fame. His offspring include stakes winner Bold Hour and G1 winner Wajima.

His sire Nasrullah (GB) (Nearco (ITY)) was the winner of the Coventry Stakes in England and Champion 2yo Male, he was also third in the Epsom Derby. He's the sire of 1955 Horse of the Year Nashua (the broodmare sire of both Mr. Prospector and Roberto), stakes winner Jaipur (Champion 3yo male in 1962) and stakes winner Delta (dam of stakes winner Dike (Herbager (FR)) among many others. His dam Mumtaz Begum (FR) (Blenheim (GB)) is the dam to Nasrullah's full sibling stakes winner Nizami (GB) (Nearco (ITY)) who is the broodmare sire of Bee Bee Bee (Better Bee) the 1972 Preakness winner (thus denying Sec's stablemate Riva Ridge (First Landing) the Triple Crown as he won both the Derby before and Belmont after the Preakness). Nasrullah's second dam is Mumtaz Mahal (GB) (The Tetrarch (IRE)), a champion in England in her own right. This makes Begum a full sister to stakes winner Mirza (FR) (Blenheim (GB)).

His dam Miss Disco (Discovery) is a stakes winner as well, among those wins include the Test Stakes. Other then Bold Ruler, she is the dam to steeplechase stakes winner Independence (Nasrullah (GB)), and stakes placed Eastern Princess (Nasrullah (GB)). Her dam Outdone (Pompey) is a stakes winner as well. She is the dam to stakes winners Loser Weeper (Discovery) and Thwarted (Discovery), as well as stakes placed Good Loser (Discovery). Her dam Sweep Out (Sweep On) is a stakes winner and is the dam to stakes winner Clean Out (Pompey).

Dam

Somethingroyal (Princequillo (GB)) was raced only once in her career. Other then Big Red, she is the dam to stakes winners Sir Gaylord (Turn-To), First Family (First Landing), and Syrian Sea (Bold Ruler).

Her sire Princequillo (GB) (Prince Rose (GB)) is a stakes winner, including wins in the Saratoga Handicap and Jockey Club Gold Cup. His foals include Champion Older Male and Co-Horse of the Year Dedicate, Champion 3yo Filly and Handicap Female Misty Morn and stakes winner Third Brother among others. His dam Cosquilla (GB) (Papyrus (GB)) is a stakes winner in France. Her winninest foal is Rebee (First Fiddle).

Her dam Imperatrice (Caruso) is a stakes winner including the Test as well. She is the dam of stakes winner Squared Away (Piping Rock (GB)) and Speedwell (Bold Ruler). This is the same female family as G2 winner Alada (Riva Ridge), stakes placed Shee Clachan (Never Bend) and G1 winner Personal Business (Private Account).
